Ok, i dont seem to be able to get an answer from any orange people on this, i tell them all i want to do is unlock my p800 so i can use other sim cards in it, and in the orange shop i got told that that would void my orange care, i told her that it's a soft unlock, not a hard unlock and that their is a difference, she was like well i'm not sure. Then i told her that orange themselves will unlock it or so i've heard, she didn't seem to know anything about it and said it would probably cost £30 though, i said that was fine but she still seemed a bit confused. I even got her to ring up but i dont think the person she rang had a clue either, She then told me that if my phone got stolen but it had an o2 sim card in it then it wouldn't be covered? i was like right...
ok, so does anybody know if doing a soft unlock voids the orange care service that costs £5 a month? |

a unlock is fine todo if your phone is stolen and they magic'ly find it and they find its unlocket u can just say orange did it or the people who stole it did it everway they cant do nothing about it.
what is the differnce between a soft unlock and a hard one??? ive never heard this term used before is it because a soft one is that u get the phone drunk first before unlocking it?? |

I would say it would void Orange care as they will only cover you with the Orange sim in the phone and they do know what sim is in the handset...

no they do not they only know if u show them!
if they new what sim was in the handset that would be a invaid of privacy because that would mean they new where abouts u are and what network the chip is on and probaly the number u were useing its impossable for them to know |

Yeh, the woman told me that they can tell what phone you're using when dialing through the sim, and if it is stolen they can lock both the phone and the sim. I'm more worried about it breaking though, if it breaks can i just stick in my orange sim and take it to them for repair?
about a soft unlock and hard unlock, a soft unlock only allows you to put in other sim cards, whereas a hard unlock does other things to the phone which are blatently illegal. i think that is right anyway. |

yer but if u dial with a diff sim they dont know
and if it does brake simply place the orange sim in it and give it to them and if they check for it being unlocket simply say orange did it for u and if they ask where u got it done (which orange shop) simply say u dont remember but it was £30 theres nothing they can do your paying for it but if i was u id get them to unlock it for u when i got my 7650 unlocket from orange they said they would do it for free since ive made igleast £20 of calls (i was on monthy bill also) |

I believe they can only check what phone you are using and were you are as long as their sim card is in an turned on phone. No matter which one. If you are using an other sim card in \"their\" phone it would appear to them as if your phone was turned off.

yes i agree orange can only detect your sim lets say u have your orange sim in a SE t68 they dont know if its in the p800 or another phone and if they block both they will only block your sim (orange) and your phone that the sim is in.... and so keep your orange sim in a differnt phone and use a differnt sim in your p800 simple and they wont know a thing |

Orange and all other UK networks are aware when a SIM is used to make a call. Orange, however, link the phone to the SIM as well by IMEI and can tell whether this is being used with a different as the networks now share such info for the use of balcklisting the IMEIs of stolen handsets. Therefore, if a phone is registered stolen by a network, the IMEI is blacklisted, rendering it useless on any UK network.
As for Orange Care, due to the above, Care is voided if the handset is being used with a different SIM and they know as they can track the IMEI with the SIM. However, they're still Orange and they rarely check anything. If you need to claim for damage, you can actually send back any Orange P800 and they'd accept it as long as it is registered with them as one of their handsets of the same model.
This should clear up a few things...

ok guys, thanks for the info, but if my phone broke but was unlocked then would i have a problem taking it to them? Also do you know their policy on removing the orange logo and wether it's ok to do so? |

AFAIK, it voids warranty. Also orange have the right to refuse for a year untill the subsidised cost of the handset is recovered. Is an oftel reg.

I would like to see this in the Orange Care t&c..
As far as I know (as above) they only know whats being used on their networks; My t68 has the orange sim in it, and i use the p800 on voda..
Thus Orange will know im using a t68 but won't know what im doing with the p800 and vice versa for voda.
I tried to cancel the Orange Care last night (within 14 days) and they wouldn't do it so im going to write a nasty letter.
Apparently Orange Care isn't included in the HSCD package anymore... |
