hi guys,
I am particularly interested in this product, cos all these years I am looking for a nice mp3 player, as well as a bluetooth handsfree/handset. This product does it all~!!
I was worrying this product would only work with T610, but luckily it should work with all Bluetooth phone, at least all SE BT phone.
Here is the quotation from the press release for this product:
==================================================
Sony Ericsson today unveiled the HBM-30; a music handsfree for music enthusiasts who never want to miss a call. Doubling as a high quality digital audio player and wireless handsfree to any Bluetooth-enabled phone, the HBM-30 is the latest addition to Sony Ericsson’s leading portfolio of mobile phone accessories.
The Sony Ericsson HBM-30 is a small-sized music player for MP3 and ATRAC3, utilizing Memory Stick Duo for music storage. Through Bluetooth wireless technology, it can be connected to any Bluetoothenabled mobile phone and in that way also be used as a handsfree device. When a call comes in, the music will be muted and the user can choose whether to take the call or not. The display will show the number of the caller when not showing the name of the song playing.
The HBM-30 can also be used without being connected to a phone. Consumers can easily update the music on their Memory Stick Duo by using the music recording function of the HBM-30, or by using their PC. For PCs without Memory Stick drive, there is a wide range of adapters. The HBM-30 comes with high quality stereo headphones from Sony and 64 MB Memory Stick Duo and will start shipping during second half of 2003.
==================================================
So for all the T68i user here, we can use this product without getting the new T610 phone (although if you want to upgrade, there is nothing stopping u spending money).
However, it looks like that there won't be any connectivity on the mp3 player, no USB port or so, but we might have to get some sort of Memory Stick Duo reader/writer to do the file transfer job, probably can't do transmission from BT nor irDA to the player directly.

Transferring a over 4mb .mp3 file over bluetooth will be painfully slow...
May need to get a memory stick reader with an adapter for the duo to fit. I can't see any other way...
Hopefully SE learns from their previous mistake of the atrocious serial mmc reader and package a usb reader for the duo for this product. |

Hi all,
I doubt SE will bundle a drive along the MP3 player, cos there are users out there do have a MS drive, such as VAIO notebook users, though not many. I guess SE or Sony itself will release a MS DUO reader/writer separately. I hope that the price won't be too expensive.
What about the software? I guess SE is going to use the MS DUO with MagicGate, the "white gum", rather than the "purple gum", so a special software might be required to the file transfer and playlist composing work?

hbm30 can be used as handsfree for all Ericsson and Sony Ericsson bluetooth phone. Limited support on nokia and motorola bluetooth phone should be possible.
this is because bluetooth is an open standard, so way to pair it with your bluetooth phone is always the same
only thing I dislike about the phone is the headphone...i don't like those big headphone. |

I think it's a shame it had to be MS Duo,, I don't think the 64Mb will be enough. It will be a long time before there are 128mb and 256mb ones which already exist for MMC and SD cards which are not really any bigger.

@holy bear... the current Memory Stick reader/writers work with the Duo & its adapter. I think they go for about $50 or so. |

Yes, i realize they will get bigger, but memory stick is more expensive than the others and is currently only available in small sizes.
smartmedia can be 128mb, or maybe more
multimedia cards can be 128mb
SD cards can be 512mb at the moment
Compact flash goes up to 3Gb, albeit very expensive
and theres another one called XG, but I don't know much about it.
I guess they picked MS Duo coz its sony, and they want to make as much money on it as possible. But how many people will want to go back to only having 32 or 64mb when it is released when most other devices can use much larger storage cards already.
