Software compresses e-mails on SonyEricsson P800 |

Imhotek, a privately owned company specialising in providing messaging and knowledge management consultancy services and products, has announced the release of its Imhotek X-ccelerator Program (IXP) for the new P800 mobile phone from Sony Ericsson. IXP enables users of POP/IMAP and SMTP mail services to significantly reduce the size of data sent and received over GPRS and GSM.
IXP works in two parts. A server component is installed on a network with good links to mail servers. Companies can run their own IXP server (by purchasing an IXP server license) or use an Imhotek-hosted server for a monthly subscription. The IXP client is then installed on the P800, alongside its e-mail client. It is configured with the location of the IXP server, a username and password and the location of the useršs e-mail servers. The useršs e-mail client is then re-configured to use the IXP client as a pseudo server. When the user attempts to connect to their e-mail server, the IXP client connects to the IXP server, which in turn connects to the useršs e-mail server. IXP can now intercept all traffic between client and server for compression and optimisation.
"Whether users have a separate GPRS subscription or use a standard GSM network, data transfer using mobile networks is expensive compared to standard desktop based methods," adds Allam. "IXP is already available for Windows, Linux and Pocket PC based systems. By developing IXP for mobile phones, IT departments can ensure that all wireless data transfers across an organisation will be optimised."
"Using a standard GSM mobile link, IXP almost doubles the speed at which data is sent and received, meaning the user spends less time connected," concludes Allam. "For GPRS, where the user is billed per byte of data transmitted, IXP compressed data by up to 90 percent."

Sounds useful, but surely it's adoption relies on the fact that most people who will need to use it will need to have access to static IPs and vacant servers.
Would people be interested in a P800-only mailserver?

intresting software, I would be intrested to use that kind of software.
Im not home so often and check my emails on the fly with my P800 and if I could save time downloading mails it would be _really_ great for me.
Hope they will release a P800 version of it  |

Ya, but will the cost of the software offset the saving on the GPRS?
It seems to be targetted more at enterprise level users who have in-house email servers, rather than users who have ISP accounts. | |
