Is the P800 a 3G phone in the UK sense? I spoke to Three who are the first to launch 3 G in the UK and they say it won't work on the 3 G network - only the three hansets they have will (NEC and Motarola)

Is this true? The P 800 seems to have all of the features necessary for the 3 G network e.g. camera, video player etc.

Surely it is clever enough to work on 3 G? Or will I have to wait till SE bring out a 3 G handset?

It's a 2.5G phone.

The only company that has shown 3G phones is Ericsson, as far as I know with the Z something or other phone (Z1010 or something). A clamshell phone that is much less attractive than the P800.

P800 is not 3G but I wouldn't want a 3G phone yet.

Network & handsets no track record & 'Wow factor' services have a 'Wow Factor' price.

The P800 does everything I want on 2.5G (and is likely to do so for next 1.5 to 2 years).

Here's a link to more info on SE's first 3G phone, the Z1010 http://www.sonyericsson.com/3gsmworldcongress/

While it may offer suitable processing power and memory capabilities for video calls and streaming audio-visual content, the basic telecommunications hardware is only GSM - that is, it'll run on 900/1800/1900 GSM bands, not W-CDMA which 3 uses. Without altering the radio module, the P800 will never be compatible with 3G service.

Ericsson certainly isn't the first to offer WCDMA capable handsets with it's Z1010 - the preorders for 3G handsets in the UK currently going on can only be for one of 3 different models, i believe two NEC's and a motorola(?). Also, nokia announced it's 3G handset before ericsson (nk6500 i believe, dual mode GSM & WCDMA); SE are in fact the last manufacturer so far to announce one! (not saying that's a bad thing BTW - it's just for your information)

No.

It's a GSM phone, full stop. 3G phones are *completely* different.. Get the idea out of your head, it ain't gonna happen.

Equally, I would assume that it's going to be at least another 6 months after the Z00010101 thingy before we get a P800 type 3g communicator.
