Probably be a misprint. What would be the point of the 5V otherwise.

This better be a joke.

I doubt it only because it's cheaper for them to order a lot more of it then to order just few. Unless there are some restrains in manufacturing. I guess we have to wait and see.

Is this similar what Sony usually call it "Smart zoom" for their camera series ? (Sacrifice pixel for zoom quality)?

no because you still end with 12MP shots. To do this, sony needs to make it take 48MP photo, then use the 12MP portion of it. But since sensor is not bayer CFA, quality is not same. Iphone 48mm photo is super 💩.

The Z1 etc had something similar, 20.7Mp sensor but defaulted to 8Mp with better zoom.

Z series could do same of nokia 808, resizing to lower resolution to mask noise and artifacts. FOV was same at 20.7 and 8MP modes.

Technically x1v can also do that 2x crop. Iphone also, I didn't see them advertising those cameras as 2in1 modules. Also you can do this with any sensor, not only that you can also do 1.1 1.5x etc this doesn't make it any more versatile. If Sony thinks their fans would fall for it, they don't know them.
Gsmarena praises iphone's 2x crop zooms tho

If you have ever used interchangeable lens video camera you know that frame cropping is not the same as using the actual glass to achieve the same fov. It looks completely different.

well, the other time sony announced 5 with 1 and 10 to leave second half for pro-i.
Now since 5 is thursday, i doubt there is any other phone left.

hard to imagine that sony would have other exmor T ready now for pro-i.

PRO lines have happened whenever Sony had some pricey flagship technology they wanted to trickle down into the regular 1 by using more massive produced components. Current 1V does pretty much everything PRO/PRO-I can but with different hardware. 1V can even record external video which is something original PRO can't despite hdmi connection.

I guess Sony kind of ran out of ideas for PROs but I would assume next year will be very different than past three years for Xperia. I would be surprised if we see another 5 series phone ever again and I'm betting on heavy refresh of 1 with updated sensors across the board and display.

What trickled down from Pro-i? Not the sensor, not the glass...

I think if the would make a new Pro model with all sensors being Exmor T with nicer lenses and variable aperture for all.

BTW, does 1V take 12 bit stills?
