Sony is unusually on fire right now.

First, the airpeak, Vision-S, then now the alpha A1.
Even their new tv's and monitors are phenomenal.

I'm afraid Sony have now completed their transition to the high-end segment in all of their product portfolio except of course playstation.

Xperia will definitely not get any cheaper soon. At least they're in a better position than lg right now albeit having a smaller marketshare.

Smartphones are different beasts. Especially Android market. Sony has been saying they'll focus on high end since the first Z phone. But they keep getting hammered by the smartphone giants. They can keep their prices high but it won't save them from this miniscule share. If that's enough for them, then OK.

To them the profits per unit matter more.
Asus no longer announces midranges.
In 2020 just zenfone 7, 7 pro and ROG.

Z7 itself is midrange.
Thats why you hear "overpriced" in every Sony review. Also ripping off the few fans they have left isn't good. Every reviewer says they can only recommend to fans only. Premium price alone doesn't make a device premium.

They can't rely on fans forever.

Even Apple and Samsung have great value devices. Anyway...
Let's wait and see what happens.

Claimed to be 1iii. Steve H says it is 5mm shorter. The bezels may be smaller than render shows.
Something is weird, it says phone is narrower than 5ii.
Impossible to cut 5mm width without going to small screen.

I hope it is true zoom periscope, not fixed FL.
If ot is fixed, it cannot be more than 4,5x because it would ruin Cinema Pro.

It wasn't 100% accurate for the 1ii either. It was thought to be 5+ with 6.6" and 168mm.
Also it showed less bezels than the actual thing. A couple mm shorter height is believable but the 67mm is absurd. The panel is 65mm wide. Even curved screens don't have that thin borders as far as I know.

This render doesn't have antenna lines on the frame and the shutter button is textured.
Only 3 cameras, it must have a high mp under the main lens for mid level zoom or the periscope has variable zoom. But it doesn't look like it has a big sensor for the zoom.

Curious facts:

A9 has DRAM for fast readout.
X1 has DRAM for fast readout.

1ii seems to use Analog to digital conversion (ADC). An alternative to DRAM (also seems to be cheaper).
A1 has ADC + DRAM, A1 is 1,5x faster than A9 despite 50MP.

Considering mobile sensors have faster readout than big sensors, I now understand the rumors of 50MP prototype.
With same tech, then 1iii could do what 1ii does.

For all the right marketing purposes they should have 50mp that can do 20fps AE/AF and that would be off the wall. But ... They've said they need to keep a small resolution due to speed, A7SIII has 12mp as well. Very little chance they will go 50 but I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

A7Siii has 12mp for low light performance. I think A7Riv has the aame speed with 61mp.

In this case, sony limits on purpose.
Considering 7s and 7r are not action cameras, no need to have more.
If they wanted, a9 would have way more than 20.
But when you check the amount of rolling shutter, you see A7s3 is way faster than 7r4.

A9ii does 24MP @ 20fps + 60 AF/AE
A1 does 50MP @ 30fps (depends on file format) + 120 AF/AE .. (that is insanely brutal)

Some ppl believe the names 1 comes from "One Sony".

BONUS: in case they decide to use 50MP and keep 1.8 micron, I think it needs 1.1" or 1.2" ..

No, if 1.4um then 1/1.12" (Honestly it's enough imo. Pixels and iPhones still use that pixel pitch.)
if they keep 1.8, it would be over 18mm diagonal, more than an inch 1/0.87" if that's how they show it.

Best we can hope would probably be what Huawei has at 1.22um 1/1.28".

DRAM has been scare though. I don't expect a high res sensor since the bump doesn't seem so big. But if they match A1, that'd be insane.

Phone is thicker.
It is not counting cam bump.
We do not know how thick cam module is.

20MP 1" has 2.4 micron.
40MP 1" would be 1.8 micron.
With 50MP, you need like 12% larger than 1" to keep 1.8.
Anyway, pixel pitch is irrelenvant for low ISO cameras. There are 4/3 with larger pixels than FF, still way inferior at night.

I am probably one of the few who DGAF about front camera but I think that should have been addressed a long time ago. I do however have a problem paying USD1000 for a phone. I have pretty much resigned myhself to buying the previous year's flagship. I paid USD564.79 for my XZ Premium on 19th November 2017 five months almost to the day after it was released. X1 is USD611 over a year after release
