I just cannot believe why Sony went with 21:9 displays. Surely they will reverse that decision next year. Hopefully Xperia 1 can sell decently because Xperia 10 and 10+ will not sell at all. I am going to be surprised if they even sell 100k of them in total, probably at lot less. They are getting bad reviews and here in Sweden in all tech articles they are ridiculed for their looks, they really look ridiculous.

lol, of all the things to complain about the 21:9 display ratio is not one of them. It differentiates their phones from anything else on the market and as display sizes increase it help with one handed usage when trying to grip the phone. I wouldn't be surprised if more manufacturers move to 21:9 eventually.

Most of the main tech sites have given about 7/10.
This is regular score for midranges for all brands.

It has nothing to do with Samsung using all the chips available.
Qualcomm would never sign to other companies a deal where they say clients have to wait because first batch goes to Samsung. They were asked about this because LG G6 and they said this preference to Sammy is not real.

Tech sites judges something based on who is using, not what is being used.
The Motorola One Vision/ P40 is 21:9. Let's see if it will be bashed.
After Samsung starts to use something, tech sites completely change their opinion about the thing in question.

That Lenovo Phab Pro 2 made for AR had FPS in same location of XZ2.
They did not complain not even 30% compared to xz2.
Of course FPS in the middle is awful, but if more than one is using , ppl should not forgive one and hate on the other.

This is from Gsmarena when they did cam battle z1 x note3 x g2 :

" The OIS will help a bit with low-light photography, but without a doubt, it's more advantageous in video capturing, keeping the videos shake-free. For photos in poor lighting, a strong flash is what is needed (a wide aperture and large sensor help too)" ...

Why so much different opinion today? It is same feature ...

Remember when one big brand was caught paying ppl to bash HTC on internet?

The 21:9 is great for movies and browsing but could be amazing if they work on the UI for other apps like music player, settings and menus etc. There is so much potential but will they do it?

@Hawk12
Your points are valid but as Sony is more expensive than everything so the expectation is greater plus a person who goes for a midrange doesn't have the money therefore, price does become very important. Look at last year's Samsung midrange, all good phones but got poor reviews because of the high prices and as its midrange, they took out one feature to entice people to go for the flagship. It is what it is, Xperia 10 reviews make sense.

Price is relative since it is market dependent.
X10 is $350 in USA bit just $275 in Taiwan with 4Gb.
XZ2 and Xr had same price in USA, but here Xr was almost 50% more.
For the price of Xr, you could get note9.

Phone Arena called Samsung 10e overpriced.
It is better than s9+ but smaller battery.
But is is same price pf iphone Xr.

Android phones have price cuts quite often. Before IFA these phoses will be 20% cheaper.
Ppl just need to wait.
Something I do not understand is when someone says is not going to buy phone A because it is for example $900, but few months later price drops to $600 and the person still does not buy it ...

Here android flagships lose 50% of initial price in 7 months only.
I'd rather wait 8 months to get flagship cheaper than buying midrange on first day.
Or even last year's flagship.

I am sure 1 will be around $650 by Xmas.

BEIJING/TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp will close its smartphone plant in Beijing in the next few days, a company spokesman said, as the Japanese electronics giant aims to cut costs in the loss-making business.

Sony will shift production to its plant in Thailand in a bid to halve costs and turn the smartphone business profitable in the year from April 2020, the spokesman said on Thursday. He said the decision was not related to Sino-U.S. trade frictions.

Sony’s smartphone business is one of its few weak spots and is bracing for a loss of 95 billion yen ($863 million) for the financial year ending this month.

Some analysts say Sony should sell the business amid acute price competition with Asian rivals. The company has a global market share of less than one percent, shipping just 6.5 million units this financial year mainly for Japan and Europe.

But Sony has said it has no intention to sell as it expects smartphones to be central to technologies for fifth-generation wireless networks, where cars and various devices would be connected.

Among Japanese electronics companies, Fujitsu Ltd last year sold its mobile phone business to investment fund Polaris Capital Group.

That left just three Japanese smartphone makers - Sony, Sharp Corp and Kyocera Corp - in a global market dominated by Apple Inc, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and cheaper Chinese rivals.

Samsung late last year said it would cease operations at one of its mobile phone plants in China, as its sales in the world’s biggest smartphone market slumped.

Most people just want to buy a new device and dont wait for that long

Although what u say about price drops are very accurate by the time these happen people wont even know

And the midrange market has upgradation cycle of 6 months and is highly competitive
For a manufacturer like sony, i think they should drop the mid range.. It will be stupid to go on continuing with their current strategy for mid range

What they should do is realease 2 flagships per year and 1 compact and 1 premium
The flaships should have differentiation like the note and s series for example
The huawei mate and p series are just for namesake

I am not surprised with this move given by the sluggish sales in China. Even Samsung's China market share has sunken drastically. Furthermore, Sony Mobile Communication will be merged together with its Camera, TV and Audio businesses as of 1 April 2019. Sony's camera lenses and camera bodies are also mainly Made in Thailand. The head of Imaging is also now in-charge of its smartphone department. Perhaps this will be the strategy to leverage expertise from their powerful Alpha, Bravia and Walkman/Audio departments to build the next smartphone with IoT using 5G technology. #thereisstillhopetorecover 😂

Haven't you realised that the CEO has changed since April 2018? Kaz was replaced by Kenichiro Yoshida and he's the Chairman from April 2018 till the same period in 2019.

He's still advising Sony after he's out, though.

------

I think the strategy is good. They're aiming for synergy in their products, which is what Sony lacks since many years ago.

They should have merged Mobile long ago with the camera division and other electronics.

Unlike Samsung, who have surely recognized that cannibilizing on their other products for the sake of better phones is better than having a bleeding division. (Samsung had cameras before but today is nowhere to be found thanks to their Galaxy line-up)

It's Sony's fault to be too much overprotective of their other division like the camera and walkman division.

Thing is, it is the consumer who decides what stays and what gets to oblivion. Not them (Sony), although yes, they might have had the capacity previously to control the market, today's market is markedly different.

All the mobile losses they got and the dwindling sales of the point and shoot camera market, they could just have sacrificed either one. But alas, Sony shoot themselves on their feet by trying to save both.

Agreed with everything you said.

They should've merged them together when they bought Ericsson's share of Sony Ericsson back then.
