(I know it's a Windows smartphone of 2007/2008, but it's the effect). Marketing will be KEY for Sony in 2018!
Marketing is always key for any body, samsung didn't get this far for doing nothing. |

Why are there two different speaker grills?
Why are the top/bottom bezels different in size?
Why are the side bezels still big despite removing the fps from the side?
The design feels really dated compared to the rest, it's not even different now.
It's like they let a monkey play Mix-max over at Sony and it came up with these two phones.

I agree with @blackzeros. I have said a few times.
No OEM certifies a devices 8 months before the event.
It also still has FCC ID.
They promised something new, the MIRAI.
It was never said they would apply to all phones.
And it is pretty clear that XZ2 is not the MIRAI.
Just back to chapter 1 ( 2010-2012).
XZ2 and XZ2c are nothing WOW. Just regular design that reminds HMD Nokia 8. Bit of U11 too.
We dont know everything they have inside but probably not much different from new cpu/gpu, bigger battery and external facelift.
The decision to announce midranges at CES must mean something.
All this silence, suspicious tease and FB posts..

Rumor says there is suppose to be some vibrating sound tech or something, kind of vague but speakers size could have something to do with that. I can see phone thickness will be the main complain for a lot of ppl, probably will be reduced in xz3. Ergonomically I can see this much nicer to hold than most phones out there. |

Very true but they had top quality products that culminated into a final product (processor, RAM, Storage, OLED/AMOLED, External Storage - MicroSD) that really helped. Customers see through the marketing after purchases & reviews are made.
Sony can source top quality products and I'm not sure about their OLED displays if they're top quality for mobile, or what happend to that processor unit they purchased from Ericsson some 8yrs ago ... but it appears/seems like a quality final product - yet again like they started with the Z5 Premium. The problem was distribution, marketing and global support.

I think weight has been well overdone and overdrawn in conversation and execution in smartphones. First shaving a few single digit grams is hardly perceptible and really offers NO benefit to marketing ... and frankly no impact on sales. reviewers don't really care either, why should consumers.
Materials to shave double digit weight off total is nearing exotic territory and costs (magnesium/titanium frames, lighter polymer plastics that even bend slightly under pressure, recyled forged metals within connectors and components, etc). If you think $1000-1200US is expensive for top of the line smartphone ... shave 20g (avg 155g to 130/120/100g) and you'll definitely see either horrible C rated components OR $1500US costs (before taxes/freight).
Weight ... within a 20g difference from typical is negligible. Users are MORE concerned about performance, features, some bit of exclusitivity (at launch not overall by extreme costs: aka Nokia's Vertu waay back in the day), and the ability to USE the device day to day.
weight has nothing when it comes to the SIZE of the device: hence why more R&D and products have featured thin bezels and better ergonomics than concentrating on weight.

Heavy market is a huge piece of success.
But only Apple and Samsung have money enough to burn as much as they want.
Here you rarely see any LG or Moto on TV, sometimes only on ESPN.
PS4 is the only thing from Sony we see here. Nothing about Xperia, tv nor cameras.
Sony has an agressive marketing in few areas like Japan, Taiwan and Thailand .
I guess they try hard in Sweden too.
Last year I read an article that said about 40% of the phones sold that cost more than $400 in Taiwan were Sony.
Taiwan is home of Asus and HTC.
The issue is that all marketing seems to be about photos.
They should focus on show ppl that XZP is like a pocket Bravia.
Make ppl believe it can be the best phone for entertainment they can buy.
I love when Sony make official videos to show at the events. I have many on my computer.
M5, Z5c, Z5, Z5P, XA, X and X Perf..
But except Z5P that focus on screen, all other have photos + waterproofing only.
It was nice to know about the deal with French Police to provide X and Z4T.
They should do more stuff like this.
Make a Pro version of their app and charge for them.
Take AR to next level.

tai - probably paid samsung users trying to lower the sony appeal so sony doesn't outshine samsung at MWC again. samsung has their s9 this year at MWC but there is no surprise whatsoever cause it's been leaked for months. it is strange though, that all of a sudden that there are so many new users, all of who are bashing?

Alcatel 5 @ MWC
However, even after our brief time with the alcatel 5, we can already say shaving off the area underneath the display entirely is not a good idea. According to TCL, the goal was to make the top of the 5.7-inch, 18:9 panel easily accessible for one-handed use. But unless you have freakishly long fingers, that isn't really feasible without doing a hand-shuffle, most of us have already grown so accustomed. What the new design does achieve, however, is diminished reachability for the on-screen navigation bar at the bottom. Ergonomics are not great on the alcatel 5.
Looking at my z5 premium and placing my thumb on the bottom black bar below the navigation buttons does add a bit more stretch.
Food for thought for the 2018 range of Xperias ?
Again each reviewer will have different review and / or opinion

Heck, there's no surprise even if S9 series don't leak.

true but at least there seem to be some neat features. the variable aperture is something i am curious about. sounds great on paper but i'd like to see how it's implemented and works in real world conditions.

Variable aperture on the S9 isn't the first one on a samsung phone, it is a feature that samsung took from its W2018.
