Sony is betting on the new phones being very ergonomic if they would make it that thick. In my opinion I very much like the new design of these phones since it looks like it would be really nice to hold with the curved back and the rounded corners, and I also like the design of the X line and they used it again here with the rounded corners and the 2.5d curved glass on all edges including the top and the bottom. The only things I don't like are the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack and the somehow still average battery size despite the added thickness.

The compact needs to be thicker to manage the heat produced by the components. You can't cheat physics.
New generation of mobile chipset become smaller and smaller each year, promised of smaller heat footprint and power consumption instead Sony Compact line keep thickness at same level or more since Xperia Z3 Compact.
This can't be serious.

is it me or does the new design basically look like a Z3 with smaller bezels and a curved back with different camera/sensor placement?
i think it looks alright. it's not sexy enough from these photos to tempt me to upgrade
perhaps the pro will be the game changer, when ever that comes along.

Comes to think of it, I hope the phone in the teaser pic is something like xzp+, a xzp revision in the same size but with bigger screen like 5.8” which also mean smaller bezels if the body is the same and c/w s845 + 6gigs ram, headphone jack, 4k hdr10+, hlg, dolby vision. That I can get excited about. I quite like xzp design. |

I suppose that is true. Except for the fact that all devices that will use an SD845 processor will have a considerably larger footprint than the XZ2 compact. The GS9, if we go by the S8, will start with a 5.8 inch screen. Which means its gonna be nearly an inch larger on the diagonal, compared to the 5.0 inch XZ2 compact. That much extra internal volume must have some impact on the device's thermal envelope. The XZ2 compact cannot be the same thickness as an S9, or indeed its bigger brother - the full-sized XZ2. How much thicker it actually needs to be? I dunno; I'm no electronic or thermal design engineer. However, I assume that Sony do employ these engineers to work on these phones. Such a design choice would not be made without reason. They wouldn't make the phone unnecessarily thick, without reason.
Additionally, the SoC being made on smaller and smaller dies doesn't account for other sources of heat within an electronic device. You also have the battery (lest we forget the exploding galaxies not 2 years ago) and the RAM - of which there is now more. There's also the fact that the compact lines of phones have had WAY bigger batteries than any other phone in their size class goes a long way to explain thicknesses. The XZ1 compact had what....a 2700mAh battery? That's enormous given its 4.7inch chassis. This new compact is rumoured to have a 2800mAh battery? All that takes up space. Unless you'd rather have a smaller battery too?
Finally, phone thicknesses is a point that has long since lost meaning. We're talking about devices that are for the most part thinner than 1cm. Shaving fractions of millimeters off device thickness at this point is nothing more than pointless dickwaving. There are diminishing returns. If a phone is 7-8mm thick, reducing it down to 6-7mm isn't really going to make any difference in terms of usability or indeed pocketability. Particularly when the phones seem to be getting taller and wider as the years go by.
I suppose however, your mileage may vary on this point. I for one, do not care if the XZ2 is going to be a slightly chubby phone. Ultimately it will have a negligible impact on its usability. Its still a small device relative to its competitors, and its ergonomics; given how curvaceous is, is undoubtedly better.

Yeah, keep telling this to yourself, if that helps you sleep better. The S8/9 design is miles ahead of this ''new''

I also like this design better than s8 or 9. Note 4 was the last samsung phone I like in term of design. Smaller screen to body ratio doesn't make design any better to me. Huge bezels are hideous this day and age, but I can live with xz2 size. |

February 26th ... and the Android community is taking notice.
The key will be ... was it a bad decision to debut after Samsung or a great decision?
- as in will their hardware & features lesson the mindshare impact of Samsungs SGS lineup, or can it overtake/outdue SGS lineup impact?
Just for the fun and reminisce

(I know it's a Windows smartphone of 2007/2008, but it's the effect). Marketing will be KEY for Sony in 2018!
