That's amazing !!, at first I thought it is not for smartphone but then wow !!
I really hope Sony will have this sensor in the very near future... 1gbit means almost 120MB of DRAM...
At this speed, the internal memory speed will play a crucial part of the game as it must cope with the write speed in order to save the video, I mean a single second of 1000fps video translate into 40 seconds of 25fps video, If the video was a regular 30mbps video, then a 40 seconds in 1 seconds will require a minimum of 150MB/s write speed, that's only if the SoC is actually capable of encoding such stream on the fly !!

That sensor is awesome but I don't think it will do stuff like 4k @ 60 fps since the S835 doesn't support that. |

What chances do we think this new sensor will end up in the new Premium?
It's clearly a flagship sensor so I'm hoping it turns up in an Xperia device very soon.

It's true, but it all relates to the encoder part, can it cope with such speed or not...
If not, then the phone will only be able to record for few seconds ( as the DRAM will fill up ), and maybe the smartphone might try to use the system RAM also to help. then the ISP will have a hardwork encoding everything...
For example Snapdragon SoC encoder can handle 1080@60fps... that's 16.67 times slower than 1080@1kfps

dram capacity is 1Gigabit according to specs, if we assume fhd@60fps video's bitrates are like 20-30 mbps , it will fill up in 2-3 seconds, latest sd820 or sd835 can handle fhd@120 fps, in 3 seconds they can handle 1 seconds of 1000 fps video, so it can be total of 4 seconds, hard to catch a scene in 4-5 seconds , it should be at least 10-15 seconds ,
but if i guess 15-20 second of 720p@1000fps videos can be possible.
also dont forget 1 second of 1000 fps video turn to 64 seconds @15fps super slow motion mode....

Looking at the official video, it's look like it will be close, all those slow motion videos came at a burst of 4 seconds, and knowing that they used 15fps to demonstrate; they actually extended the length twice, the original is 2 seconds of 30fps footage.
I don't know if the DRAM will save the RAW footage or not, because if it will save the RAW footage it will be very hard as RAW is extremely large ( 1000 frames of RAW 1080p = over 6GB ), and if it will save the encoded footage then it will have a lot of data transfer, moving the data from sensor to the ISP/Encoder to encode, then going back to the sensor DRAM which does not make any sense !!
I believe as soon as the DRAM get the data it will directly start to send the data to the ISP, the DRAM is fast enough to have both write and read at the same time at such speed, the camera software might save the temporary data into RAM as the ISP won't have enough time to encode the stream on the fly. it will do this as long as the stream from the sensor to the ISP is continued, but because at such high-speed the DRAM will be filled faster than the ISP link is capable of handling, current smartphones sensors uses the standard MIPI CSI-2 / CSI-3 link, the fastest one which is a 4 lane CSI-3 link can handle up to 2.9GB/s which is way smaller than the RAW footage for 1080p@1000fps ( 1 second = 6.22GB ), so in theory a true 1000fps footage will max out at a 1.5~2.0 seconds.. I'm not an engineer so it's just an estimate of what I know...
The spec. on Sony's website indicate another thing...

the strange thing is that this is the continue video mode ( no burst of slow speed in the middle ), why still having 720p@240 while they can have it also at 480fps ? I guess it will be available but not in a continued video mode..

If the rumours about XA(2017) are true,this just proves how blind and strategy lacking Sony is.They're about to release a mid-range product with more RAM than their last year flagship(XZ). |
