Yeah, HDR looks promising... I was planning to buy a new monitor for my PC ( Yes I still have one, and I use the montor also with my laptop ).. but after I saw AMD's preparation for HDR with their next-gen GPU's I thought it will be better to wait for HDR enabled monitors.. in any case.. my monitor upgrade plan is already too long as my current one is more than 5 years old already...

I really dont think they should've jumped to 23/25MP but instead made a larger sensor that performs better in low light

+1. Full manual mode would also be appreciated.

The Nexus sensor has a larger pixel size from what i understand.

And on another note Samsung are said to be fabricating their own customer 1/2" sensor at 12MP which should in theory do even better in low light. Providing rumours are true.

1/2 inch sensor is not that much bigger than a 1/2.3 sensor, around 3% bigger, the smaller MP count resulting in larger individual cell size would provide better light capturing. Ideally I'd like to see a 1/1.8 sensor, it is marginally bigger than a 1/2.3 but provides 28% more surface area for light. If Sony would opt for a bump on the back or curved rear to accommodate a larger sensor, a 2/3 in sensor would be a dream but that won't happen.

Not good at calculating stuff like this but how much bigger would 1/2" be over 1/2.6" which the S6 currently has.

But if rumours are correct.
1/2" sensor + 12mp + F/1.7 lens could be a killer combo

I cannot find the exact dimensions of the IMX240 from sony, the sensor that is. My calculations were based off this wiki sensor article, seems that the sensors in question there are 4:3. Although perhaps some off the area numbers seem off mathematically on that page but maybe that's on purpose? oh well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format

Using this page
http://www.dpreview.com/glossary/camera-system/sensor-sizes

I opted to average out the dimensions between 1/2.7 and 1/2.5, so W 5.5655 and H 4.1625, of course this is not ideal but the best until I can find exact dimensions of the IMX240 sensor. Area would be 23.16mm^2, a 1/2 in has an area of 30.72, difference of around 30ish percent. This is all assuming the sensors being used area 4:3, but this is where we run into trouble with samsung. While the IMX240 is a full 4:3 sensor, samsung doesn't use the entire sensor for photos from what I know, instead they opt for cropping the sensor into a 16:9 (5312 x 2988). I am not sure how samsung opts to do this, perhaps only a 16:9 portion of the sensor is only used and the rest of sensor is not used, or they used a 4:3 image and then crop it using software? I feel it is the former since the latter would require extra processing steps. So question remains, will samsung use the entire 1/2 sensor or crop it to 16:9 as well?

My point is explained here by gsmarena
http://www.gsmarena.com/sonys[....]p_camera_sensor-blog-13806.php

Instead of cropping the 16:9 uses a different area of the sensor, this is what I feel samsung is doing, as stated above. I feel F1.7 would be overkill and might be harder to pull off with a larger sensor in such a smaller factor from what I have read on here, but I could be mistaken.

tl;dr, assuming 4:3 sensor size, 1/2in would be around 30% bigger than the current 1/2.6 sensor in the S6.

If the rumours are correct, a 1/2 at 12.2MP and f1.7 could be a lethal combo. If samsung adds OIS and manual settings, I may be swayed to go back to samsung for my next phone. At this moment, I cannot foresee Sony releasing anything superior, unless somehow by some miracle Sony adds wireless charging, full manual mode to the camera and a f1.8/f1.9 lens. Of course getting the device to market in spring would also be nice.

Samsung cannot make a good sensor, first of all they have first study how sony made that BSI technology and then Samsung need a little bit better and give it another name, it's only a bad copy what Samsung made.

We allready use to it from Samsung.

Knowing Sony, they're probably the ones making that 1/2 12.2mp sensor.

Whatever sensor Samsung puts into the next Galaxy S7 devices the results will be more than just decent. Looking at the last 2-3 years the S and Note line did not disappoint in imaging.

Samsung already proved they can make incredible sensors as well as showed that they can do better with Sony's sensors than Sony.

But hey, tell yourself whatever rubbish that makes you sleep at night mate.

I want to greet the new thread even though i'm not active here as i used to be. I wish sony to go out of their survival mode starting from this year and bring truly competitive flagship phones with strive for perfection. Personally i'm not waiting for sony anymore, not for the next few years anyway, because i realized that there is no reason to do so as what i'm looking for is found in the device i bought a month ago. I spent my precious money on a note 5 64gb (gorgeous silver titanium) and i can't be happier. Finally (and that is a big finally) samsung made a premium design and drastically slimmed their touchwiz and these are some of the reasons that makes it a truly great device (with its flaws), no doubt the best out of all devices when you compare the pros and cons afaic after watching and reading many comparisons with all devices and checking the devices myself. That is coming from a person that in the past disliked everything by samsung mobile. Not anymore. I still prefer google apps over most of samsung apps (aside of spen apps) but it is just personal preference. I wish sony to get inspired from the strive for perfection and competitive mind of samsung starting from this year.

@Tsepz_GP
True. as you wrote in other words, it does not matter as samsung makes generally the best overall and most balanced camera end result because of best in mobile image processing and paired with imx240 (as in my note 5) - a winning pair. The most reliable shooter in auto mode hence the best afaic and arguably the best in manual mode (rivaled by v10 in manual mode). It is what it is.

So after jack debuted at CES, not even playstation VR (was rumoured), all in all, a lackluster show from Sony imo. No smartwatch 4 at ces, so next stop is MWC at the end of Feb. Guess playstation VR will be at E3. There is nothing on the FCC, nothing on the Indonesian website either, maybe something on that Indian import site but I lost the link to that site at this time.

Since it is 2016, I am to presume the code for the phones will now start with F?

6 weeks until MWC, if Sony moved to a one/year flagship with devices launching in Q2, then either we are in for a surprise and Sony will introduce a flagship, april/may availability or we are in for disappointment, so no flagship, and perhaps only a tablet and a midrange phone and smartwatch?

TMobile Poland slide said 2 Xperia phones end of Q2.(Although we dont know if they'll be flagships)
I.e. not before June, so we'll see.

Sony may hold their own event.

If this is the design language Sony is going with... Looks like a mashup of a iPhone and older galaxy phones from Samsung, with a touch of a Xperia design. Looks awful to me
