At that screen size (4.6") 720p is more than enough personally and it's only going to help with prolonging the battery life too. No other phone within Android comes close to Sony's compact range, top spec in phone only marginally bigger that the iphone SE. Hope Sony nail it with the X Compact and give every other sub 5" phones and absolute hammering in the spec department.
I'd be over the moon if the X Compact has this spec
4.6" 720p IPS-NEO display
SD820 CPU
3gb of RAM
Stereo speakers
IP68 rating
32gb storage +SD card slot (64gb would be amazing)
Side mounted fingerprint scanner
23mp OIS rear cam with laser focus and dual LED flash
13mp OIS selfie cam with auto focus
2700 mAh battery
S-Master digital amp
Less than 65mm wide
and they remove fingerprint sensor for American market |

Just flash a different region firmware anything else than north American will do...as the hardware is still present anyway |

From https://www.techtastic.nl/sony-xperia-xz/ but using the polish text from http://pclab.pl/news71064.html, since I can't read dutch
Seems the XZ will have 4 gig of ram, same camera a current X line, 23MP, and the front will be 13MP. Rear cam will have dual led as seen in the leaks and laser autofocus. Both devices should go on sale on September 24th according to the polish website, but that is a saturday, so not sure how accurate that is.

I'm currently undecided as to which one I'll get to replace my Xperia X, the full size or the compact. I love using the Z5 compact that my wife has as one handed operation is a breeze and you tend to get better battery life out of the compact too but then on the other hand I love the larger screen for watching videos and browsing the net. If like past compact releases and they go toe to toe with their big brother in the spec department I think I'll be leaning towards that plus it's most likely to be the cheaper of the two.

I won't be getting either unless we see some top shelf specs and a modern design.

^As design is always subjective, what would you call top shelf?

*sigh*
I remain sad that they seem to be ignoring the flagship Ultra category. Odd that they're still making mid range Ultras, but no flagships.
I'm finally getting a new job in a couple of weeks and would be willing to lay down some big $$$ for a top shelf Ultra to replace my Z Ultra, even if it meant going down to a 6" screen size. |

@XperiaJunkie
Specs at least matching the latest and greatest from other top manufacturers within a +/- 4 month period.
- Dual something with the camera (LEDs or lens or something)
- 64GB ROM (I'm tired of 'internal storage full move files to sdcard' nonesense)
- 2K or higher resolution screen
- A camera that I can take a photo within 5 seconds of pulling from my pocket and the result is something my dad would say "that is nice"
- Waterproof the way they used to
- Don't know how ready the SD830 is but if the SD820 is the best around then do that
- USB type-c finally
- Min 3GB RAM but 4GB would be better
I think that would qualify as top shelf.
As you said, design is subjective. I reserve decision on that until I see some press shots and videos and hold it in my hand.

I agree with all but one of those and thats the screen resolution, I'd still be perfectly happy with 720p on the compact and 1080p on the full size. I know 2K sounds great on paper but for me at least it's just meaningless numbers that do nothing but increase the price of the phone.

@RickyD So basically you want a Sony Xperia branded Samsung S or Note phone. |

@XperiaJunkie The 2K resolution is for the sake of Sony mobile. Anything less and it wouldn't be considered in the industry as a flagship and wouldn't get mentioned in comparison to others on tech blogs and reviews. In stores (still where most phones are sold) they'd be quickly dismissed as overpriced because it is using a resolution from 2012.
@JohnnyNr.5 Do you want less?

@ricky nope. After spending quite a time with s7 edge of my brother I came to the conclusion that it's currently best phone you can get. Great display, camera and battery life. The only down side is no USB typ c and water protection, but now there is the note 7! First device with no compromises. And having the Samsung theme store you can easily get rid off touch wiz's cartoonish look. Only its price is currently holding me back from buying one. |
