Samsung unveils Mirror and Transparent OLED displays

06/10/2015 at 4:30 PM
by Brad Linder

Samsung has been showing off transparent display technology for years, but now the company’s going big. This week Samsung unveiled 55 inch Transparent and Mirror OLED display panels.

It’ll probably be a while before this sort of technology is affordable enough for use in your home. But Samsung figures there are plenty of uses for these displays in retail and other commercial settings.

For example, add an Intel RealSense camera to the Mirror display and you can create a virtual fitting room with an interactive system that shows you what clothing, jewelry, or other items would look like if you tried them on.

The transparent display can be used for interactive signage that displays information without blocking your view. Samsung imagines this could be used in car dealerships, hotels, or transportion hubs.

Eventually these technologies could bring smart features to the home. A smart mirror would let you check the weather or check your email while you check your hair, while transparent display could be used to create smart windows… or something.

Transparent display looks useful for having sav nav on your car windscreen, mirror is cool too. Reminds me of Minority Report and personalised shopping. Now they can advertise for diarrhea medicine as you come out of the toilet....awkward.
