Google Buying Nest for $3.2 Billion to Expand in Devices

Google Inc. (GOOG) is buying digital thermostat maker Nest Labs for $3.2 billion as the Internet search company moves deeper into web-connected devices.

Nest, led by former Apple Inc. (AAPL) alumni Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, will continue to operate under its own brand, Mountain View, California-based Google said today on its website. The all-cash deal is subject to regulatory review and is expected to close in the next few months, Google said.

To diversify beyond Web ads, Google is buying its way into the gadget market, a spending spree that picked up in 2012 with the $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. By adding Nest, Google gains a popular seller of connected home thermostats and smoke alarms, while getting data on the growing number of customers whose energy usage is tracked online.

NOTE: Tony Fadell worked on multiple Apple Products including co-designing the 2nd generation iPod (touch-click-wheel), Apple's first camera which was almost 10yrs before any digital camera became close to mainstream, and several other products, including the Sony Walkman - unsure which year!

You see the significance here is not that he worked for Apple nor for Sony, the significance here is the war on mobile devices is evolving away from boasting how many Applications are in the web/device stores or the quality of such apps BUT in the accessories marketing in how connected these devices become into our normal daily lives.

The Nest learning thermostate was an INSTANT HIT for iOS users and STILL continues to grow - took almost 1.5yrs to get to Android (which I'm unsure fully works), and the device SAVES users $$$ significantly so, especially in N. America. There are now 3 versions with different wattage/amperes/volts ratings for various oldschool type connections for a much broader acceptance.

Google is AFTER this market in a BIG way!!
WHY?

Telemetrics ... new data revenues for ads catered to you.
Example: Ads for sales/deals on milk/bread/meat/vegetables when your connected fridge (Samsung/LG droid device, ahem) alerts for new shopping items of the day/week/month. New Google Wallet purchases tied to this ... look-out AirMiles!!! (this is the KING of data mining and their going to hurt in 5yrs).

Increasing ties to users for their smartphone OS brand. You'll see a MUCH harder push for cars, exercise equipment gym's and home security heavily so.
