BUSINESS October 31, 2013 at 8:00 AM
Sony said shipments of its Xperia smartphones were strong in the September quarter, but weak camera and PC sales coupled with the flop of its big-budget feature “White House Down” dragged the Japan-based giant into the red once again. The company on Thursday posted its results for the fiscal second quarter, during which it lost about $196 million on sales that grew nearly 11% on-year to $18.1 billion thanks to the weakening yen. Sony warned that its electronics business is weakening more quickly than it expected, however, as TV and PC sales continue to slow. The company still forecasts a full-year profit of about $300 million thanks in part to its upcoming PlayStation 4 launch, though that estimate is down 40% from the $500 million profit Sony projected earlier this year.

Nice to see their smartphones selling well for once and the PS4 looks to be on the right track.

do you guys know that a PS4 gives no profit?
Its the games and online content that makes the profit.

Sony has a long way to catch up, not in terms of finance, but in terms of innovation.
Imo they are 7years behind and thats sad because a long time ago they were the spearhead of innovation

profitable in some region I think EU and Asia but in US, they said they just need people to buy 1 game and 1 year PSN+ to be profitable.

I wouldn't call it no profit but rather a very small profit per unit.

Sources say PS4 costs $381 to build, so it's $18 profit per unit or may be less if you also factor the retailer's profit. There are other ways to reduce the cost through negotiations especially if it's large quantities that are being produced. Also suggested retail prices also differ from which country you are in.

It is small but if their expected sales figures are met or even exceeded it will still give profit even if you factor in the cost of R&D that went into the PS4. With the sales being 4.2 million units just this 2 months and if it continues on they'll eventually profit more on it. If sales suddenly stop then that would be the time to call it a flop in overall profit.

The online content I would agree would be the one to gain a larger profit from rather than sales only, but the online profit relies heavily on how many people did buy the PS4.

Sony has a long way to catch up, not in terms of finance, but in terms of innovation.

BTW what do you mean 7 years behind? and long way to catch up in terms of innovation? pretty vague statement, considering their hardware both smartphones and consoles are up to date and are the latest. They still produce excellent camera sensor tech and leading premium cameras like the RX100, and those qx wireless lenses are something completely new to the table, also although we have yet to see but there will be gaikai technology, and they pretty much made waterproofing/dustproofing a standard in phones unlike before, also they are pushing 4k content and previously they were the ones that made blue-ray the standard for HD and FullHD content.

Sony had a lot of contribution in innovative technologies even today, maybe you just don't see it.

@allamerican

IDK if you looked at the date this was posted but it's a couple of month's old, which is old, and PS4 hasn't been considered here either.

In terms of smartphones Sony might be small step behind other brands.
But when you look at what Ericsson had in terms of WORKING prototypes back in 2003-2006 you just can't believe they still don't have all those nice idea's up and running.

In terms of overal products they are just keeping track with the rest. Agreed in terms of cam's they are doing a good job, but they are also holding back the amount of mp on a cam.
Wireless charging is now more then 10 years old, still i don't see any Sony products using it

No innovation when it comes to the vaio line
Their TV's are good, but overprized
Poor branding

And they are going to miss the AI products train, which is sad because they were once right on top of it with aibo

A lot of megapixels on a small sensor doesn't make much sense.. I am hoping that they are holding back on the size of the sensors, not the mp count.
