Now I won't want a lengthy argument, but I would just like to reply.

GSMArena's gripes about the G3's display are the brightness and reflectivity. PA says the brightness (sunlight legibility suffers) and oversaturation. The problem with the brightness may be panel-specific, screen lottery perhaps. Another thing is that LG might have chosen the panel so that it would consume less power since they only managed to fit a 3000 mAh battery, which could be because they wanted to fit too much inside a really compact phone to satisfy their obsession with bezel-less phones (and that's probably why the camera sensor used is smallest compared to other flagships). Reflectivity is caused by the glass, of course, I think. And oversaturation is a problem with their calibration.

What I'm trying to say is, you can't judge QHD displays with just a few reviews of just one phone.

I hope SONY sticks with 1080p screen and will not go 1440p like the g3. 1440p has no benefit over 1080p because the contrast ratio of 1440p is lower than 1080p. Moreover its dimmer and sucks more battery than 1080p and u can't tell the difference in sharpness between 1080 and 1440p.

The same thing was said from 360p to 720p to 1080p ... same story every time

Its the only way to sell phones these days.. you need to pack in the best possible specs, otherwise you don't stand a chance. Personally, I blame android for all of this nonsense.

After watching this very informative talk which touched on the issue

a little bit after the 9min mark

http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/2-535

It looks like you go past the point of diminishing returns past 300ppi. Anything bellow that could hamper readability/contrast, but overall.. there is only so much you can do.

I went to the store and looked at some 4K TV, Sony in particular, and it makes perfect sense on those big screens.. I haven't done the math but a 50 inch screen at 4K is probably around the 300 mark and it looks nice and smooth. I always felt that 1080p still looked kind of shitty to be honest.

By the way, 4K is precisely 8.3Mpix .. the exact 3840x2160 resolution in which the 808 records 8Mpix photos, so when you project one of those on a 4k TV is exactly 1:1 ratio

But at 4-5 inches .. I am not sure if we even needed to go over 720p to be honest, and especially not over 1080p, but we will anyway because of what I said earlier..

top specs = sales

bless Apple for bringing some sanity into all of this.

True to a certain extend, but it was exactly that.. 300ppi+ and they ran away with the retina marketing campaign

iPhone 4 was 330ppi, iPhone 5 was 326ppi. I don't know where they MacBook retina displays are, but I bet they are around 300 ? They will probably go 1080p for the iPhone 6 due to increase in size..

All I am saying is that they are proving that you can sell millions of phones without having pointless specs such as the LG G3 for example, and many other for that matter. There is no software that can take advantage of it all, and here we are complaining that the Z3 won't have Snap 80005 and a 8k display., while no one is asking, why ?

Granted, the snap 805 is really great for imaging/sound since it has a very potent DSP, and it also has a better GPU which could have some practical applications in the 3D gaming, but other than that...

The screen res war is just silly tho... they should be working on sunlight legibility, strength, weight, and other more practical R&D.. the resolution is good enough at 300+ ppi

I am not saying that what they are doing is bad, its actually amazing, but I just don't see it being a useful end user feature.

^ thank you! To lazy to do the math..

So with the TVs distance plays a big role I guess because the 50inch Sony Bravia 4k I saw the other day looked flawless from about 6 meters.. ~70ppi is still very low, but then again I wasn't looking at text, just 4k video footage captured by those new pro 4k Sony cameras.

The macbooks are kind of low I guess but they still look pretty good from a "normal" laptop usage viewing distance..

The point is, 500ppi on a 5 inch screen is an overkill.. I will have to see in person, but I really doubt that you will be able to tell the difference b/w 350ppi and 500ppi on that same size screen.. but I might be wrong.

I would love to see these 3 side by side, but there is nowhere I can do that here in the US

Sony has not mentioned QD when talking about Triluminos on their mobile phones, unlike how they explain it on their Bravias.

This is from Z2's features page:

TRILUMINOS™ technology uses LEDs, which emit purer reds and greens, creating a brighter and more uniform light that captures the true colours of the source. From lush landscapes, to natural skin tones – Sony delivers a significantly wider colour range. So you can view every moment in astonishingly authentic colour and breathtaking quality.

Live Colour LED is a brand new technology integrated only into Sony devices, giving you the world’s deepest and most intense colours on a smartphone or tablet display. This new innovation combines red and green phosphor with blue LEDs and customised colour filters to produce a brighter and more uniform light. Capturing true colours without the risk of oversaturation.

Interesting news.
Sony are apparently making a 16MPx CMOS image see sensor, called IMX240 for Samsung's G Note 4. No info published about the sensor, but I'm going to predict a 1/2.5 or 1/2.6 sensor with 1.12 micron pixels.
Probably Exmor RS type.
