oh that is really weird, that place it in a really awkward position with the pricing because with the other specs its still very high end, better than nexus 7 so it might be 300+ USD but its can't do phone call so it can't go higher than 600 kind of pricing compare to the 650USD GPE ZU. If they price it at 400, it seems too much for a sub 7" tablet even with premium built quality and materials, not many people want to pay 400 for a small tablet since the existence of nexus 7. Even many Apple fans complains about the new retina mini. If they price is at 300 or 350 is might be more reasonable but it will make the ZU looks bad as all the specs are almost identical but cost twice as much.... Not many would be willing to pay 300-350 as long as the Nexus 7 exist either.

If you ask me, it is dead on arrival, with cheaper tablets out there which basically do the same thing and are bigger and not an awkward size. Battery is also smaller than the LG tab 8.3 (4600 mAh) and nexus 7 (3950 mAh), with both devices sporting slightly higher res screens 1200 x 1920, minor difference though. The ZU only has a 3050 mAh batter, smaller screen sure but not sure much smaller than the Nexus 7 which has a larger battery.

Only thing the ZU has over the other 2 is the CPU, IP58, and super thin, otherwise since it is skinned, it will not receive updates as fast as the nexus 7, unless the wifi only ZU comes as a GPE edition?

Anything over 249 US, will kill this device.

Sony can't go at a loss on it, so the price IMO won't be that low.
Afterall it is a premium device as far as build quality is concerned (materials), element proofing and powerful hardware.

Was kinda waiting on it...glad to see it's close to announcement.

Yeah craftmanship is probably the selling point, screen might get a thumbs up for triluminos color, sure a 16:10 is the best screen aspect ratio for tablet but for watching video its a great deal. 300 is probably the max I would pay for, but then I look at the ZU which is basically the same thing but also a phone the 650 price tag on the ZU just looks silly. Pricing it at 300 also means a very small mark up, not sure if its even worth the time or investment, at 350 or 400, the gap would be too big from the competitors most people won't even give it a chacne. I think they might as well put all the resources on Tablet Z2 and go big. Though this could be a way to clear out their old parts supply from the ZU I guess, selling it for cheap, the ZU probably under perform for its ridiculas size.

"I have a 4.3" (or above) phone, the Z ultra without the ability to make calls is it's perfect companion!" Said no one ever.

Stupid decision.

Though I have heard the battery will be bigger and it will use slightly different materials.

my only problem with it is that no android media players has hardware support for 10bit MKV.

Not even PC's have hardware support for 10bit, only software, at least the s800 is powerful enough to handle it through software right? Although that easily drains the battery. Still it's perfect for that triluminous screen

I wish hardware manufacturers supported 10bit. I guess they're too busy making hardware for 4k. But then again 10bit isn't that much mainstream compared to the regular 8bit

10-bit provides better compression thus smaller file size if used properly.

Isn't that just a ~7-inch tablet? What exactly is "Stupid" about that...?

But it's not a 7 inch tablet, it's a phablet at 6.44 inches. As I posted before, it is situated in a weird place, since all the other 7 or 8 inch tablets have much larger batteries. Sony is just trying to save money on making a new 7 inch tablet and reusing the ZU.

Yep, comes with a bigger battery (no precise information yet), a soft touch plastic back and apparently it will retail for £299, €399, $399. I thought in 2014 Sony mount a tablet offensive, we'll see... I'm still hoping for a proper 7 to 8" tablet. Sony Xperia Tablet Z(1) Compact ?

ouch, 400 bucks, or even worse, 400 euros for this? thats almost 1700zl here in poland lol.

at this price point, I feel i'd rather get an older tab z 16gb, or new nexus 7 with 3G, even the apple ipad mini with 4G is cheaper. Dell Venue 8 Pro is also cheaper and runs full windows.

Nice try sony, but no.

"nice try sony, but no." can be said also on z ultra. i hope they are going in the way of the galaxy note line in terms of spec for z1 ultra - no compromise on spec, and not less important, shorten the phone dimensions a bit. i would consider buying it.

@amirprog

I was in the same boat, when I heard sony was making a note competitor, I was excited and was definitely going to buy it, but once it was released, it was too large, had no integrated pen, and it was not wacom. I honestly do not need to use a pencil on a screen, I'd rather use a wacom pen from the device.

I have no idea how the sales of the ZU are right now, but I don't think it made any dents in the phablet market at all.

So maybe, just maybe Sony will realize the mistake and redo their ZU for the next gen?
