Just as the title says, I'd like to know about these figures... why are they popular and how/why do a set of 7 tiny figures cost 50, 60 or even 70 USD?

Here are some:
“Cup no Fuchiko” was planned and designed by manga artist Katsuki Tanaka. She was born into the world as a capsule toy, and in the blink of an eye, she became a big hit with 1.3 million being sold. It seems there are many in Japan who want to be soothed by this tiny girl.
