Nokia Lumia 1020 small review

Thank you for sharing .. its always nice to hear what a current 808 owner thinks of the 1020. Like I said many pages ago.. most of us are very particular about what we like in a phone, otherwise we wouldn't own one.

I am hoping that the black update can speed things up, but to be honest.. I doubt it.. It seems like this implementation needs a stronger CPU/GPU to get up to speed, which is crazy considering how much more powerful the 1020 is when compared to the 808.

As far as IQ.. it should get much closer to the 808 after the black update. I don't want to hype up too much, but when I look at some of those 1520 shots I don't see that annoying grain.. they look more like what you would expect from a Symbian based machine.

Great.. I'll go back to using my 1020 when black comes out then... lol (can't escape the 808)

You back on the 808 ? Its hard to give up that IQ.. I know how you feel. Black should come soon and then you are getting WP 8.1 sometime in April/May after the Build conference.

It's actually about more than just IQ although, I can't lie, that is part of the reason. Setting IQ aside there are some things about the 1020 that I'm just not adjusted to yet. Not saying it's a bad phone but there are things about the 808 which I have become quite accustom to;

Size- The 808 fits in my pocket a bit better and I can easily reach the top left of the screen with my thumb (while holding 808 in right hand). neither of which are 100% true for the 1020.
Profiles- I haven't yet found a way, app or otherwise to switch "profiles" on the 1020 much less have them expire based on a predetermined time like on the 808. (yes, I use that feature everyday)
Email- the WP8 email is not as user friendly as the Symbian client when you have multiple mailboxes set up IMO.
Camera- aside from IQ, I like the "Custom" settings on the 808.. its nice to not have to switch the ISO and exposure compensation back to how you like it every time you turn on the camera. Not to mention the ability to adjust saturation and sharpness.
Recorder- love the audio quality of the built in recorder on the 808.... intuitive and simple to use. I know I can dl one for the 1020 but for some reason its just not the same and I use this in meetings all the time.
Battery- Its no secret that one is replaceable and the other is not.... this has wound up being more of a big deal to me than I thought. Although it has not yet caused me an issue, I get charge anxiety which is something I have never previously had to deal with while carrying a spare for the 808.
Slide lock- it is just nicer than the lock button and by holding it down on the 808 you get an instant led flashlight.... im sure they will eventually get to this on the 1020 but for now I'm not aware that it's even possible.
Send/End keys- apparently I took these for granted on my 808. I'm not a big fan of having to "slide up" then "click answer" to get a call... I'd rather just push the button.
U/I- I really like having all my daily use widgets on one screen and email/text stuff on another... not to mention being able to have different backgrounds on each page. Tiles just seem boring.
USB- not as functional on the 1020 and my phone has to be upside down in my cup holder to plug it in... just a preference thing.

I know that seems like I'm tearing down the 1020 but it's really not about that.. It's probably more about my lack of desire to adjust to the new phone because it does have some very nice features. I'll just have to keep playing with them both for a bit till I either decide to box up the 1020 and toss it in the closet or use it on a daily basis. For now the 808 will be my daily/primary phone but I do keep the 1020 either in my car or pocket so in the event I want all the manual camera control I can just swap my sim and enjoy all wp8 has to offer.

oh well, thats just my opinion.

^ yes, very well put... I have a fery similar view on the matter, thanks for the summery! No matter what the haters want to believe, the 808 is a proper smartphone first, camera second.

You should try situations for the profile timing thing.. its a very powerful application and the dev is giving it away for free

Nokia 808 is a smartphone without a proper ecosystem. ..kinda useless imo

Anyway it is good to see the Black update being pushed. I wonder how long before it gets to Europe...hopefully early 2014

Thanks... and yeah, Ive played with situations but not sure if I simply didn't like it or it was too much for what I want/need... Im fine with the timed profiles as I usually only need it for an hour or so while with a client, at diner or in a meeting.... works like a charm.

Proper ecosystem as in a large variety of Apps, Games, Accessories, Dev community etc... I guess. So the 808 has somewhat of an ecosystem but not a proper one comparable to even WP.

^ I see...

Anyway, here we go

http://allaboutwindowsphone.c[....]oring_the_imaging_improvem.php

I would say that this is a pretty significant improvement.. still not as clean as the 808, but its close enough to where it doesn't really matter. I would love to see what mlife and fbloise have to say on the matter since they have both devices on hand, but as far as I can see.. noise levels are down and color reproduction is much closer to the Symbian way, which is a very good thing.

And of course with RAW you can do whatever you want..

I would have to admit that the 1020 is becoming a pretty powerful camera..

^ I think you will notice the biggest improvement outside during landscapes where fine detail is important and before the update all the noise/grain kind of took away from it.

It looks less noisier for sure.. still not sure if its at the expense of some sharpness, but I will take it.. its always easier to add sharpness than remove noise.

Would esato leto you upload DNG/RAW files ?

I can't wait to try that.... once the weather clears I will be posting some samples.

Yeah... but a step in the right direction for sure. Lets not also overlook the possibility of my error in shooting or focusing the shot... Once I get outdoors, I think we'll get a better idea.
