The Market (or Just T-Mobile) is in a slump |

I've had T-Mobile for about a year and a half now, been using a Nokia 3390. The phone pretty much was free and had a lot of features that were breakthrough 2 years ago. Me, being the gadget freak I am, was satisfied for a long time. It doesn't let me down often, as it's been doused in water, soaked in snow, dirt, and dropped countless times and it still seems to work. Sure, it may get scratched up at times, but slap on another faceplate and the keys and display seem brand new.
The thing is I've noticed friends all around me getting flashier phones, colour phones, phones with polyphonic ring tones and it's one of the first times I've ever felt envy for someone else's gadgets. I've decided I need a new phone after monitoring the forums here at esato for a couple days. Now, I've looked at the T68i in stores at the T-Mobile booths, and nothing compares, but the price just isn't friendly enough. So I looked at some other Ericssons (looking to make the switch) and found most of them to look pretty similar to, if not exactly like, human male reproductive organs. The T60 series, not to mention the T300, coudn't look any uglier.
I remembered the classic Ericssons, the T28's and R200's and whatnot. So I went on ebay and found something that tickles my fancy a whole lot, the T39. With it's full fledged set of features and bluetooth technology, I feel I must have this phone. The thing is, it's not available in the retail mobile market in the US. You rarely if not ever see a mobile phone store that sells phones not currently offered or pushed by any particular carrier. Old but immaculate phones like the R520m are just not available anymore, replaced by phones that may or may not be better. I feel that these phones should be offered regardless. I don't want to have to go to eBay to buy a phone thats probably hands-down better than what the carrier is offering.
Back to T-Mobile- great service, GSM is fun technology. But their retail phone selection is crap. Too many chintzy phones and not enough good value phones. ATT has the great Allures and Duramax's, cheap and awesome phones. The cheap phones at TMobile consist of the 3390, the T300, and the R225 Samsung. Gross. Yeah, the V70 is nice, insanely expensive and fragile. And yes, the Samsung V205 is sweet but so out of reach. Where are the T39's and R520m's?
I dunno, these are just ramblings. I've been scouring eBay for T39's, all around 80-100 dollars. I'd get a R520m but it's kind of large by todays standards and I'm a pocket phone kind of guy. It'd be nice to hear some other voices reply to this.

If you're such a gadget freak why are you looking at such old phones? You mention all these new feaures you're interested in such as colour screens, polyphonic ring tones etc, but the phones you've mentioned don't offer any of these features.
The reason why these phones arn't sold anymore is the same as any other product - who wants to buy a tape player when you can buy a CD player?
In the end if you want an old phone go on ebay, if you want a new phone with all the latest gadgets buy a new one. Your choice.

But I mean, can you buy an S55 on a budget? I'm still a student, good phones have gotten cheaper, but they just get discontinued. It's not a good cycle. |

Lets get this into perspective, your mobile is the most personal piece of electronic equipment you will own, (unless you have a pacemaker) so get the most technically advanced one available, if you buy rubbish you will regret it. get a secondhand t68i if you dont want to spend out.

The T68i is the best bang for the buck out there. You will love it. Buy a used one of you have too, still a great phone and the price will be even better. Altough I hear brand new T68i's on ebay go for around 200 bucks now. Thats not too bad. |

I second that. The T68 is a great phone and has most of the basic features you could ever want. It was the proof of concept for the P800. Ebay is the way to go...you could pick up a used unlocked one for around $150. |
