I downloaded those shots yesterday. Don't particularly like those tiny details like tree bark, grass, some leaves. These parts look like oil paintings and Nokia N95/N82 took similar photos, didn't like them either.
And we don't need to go to 100% magnification to see that

Interesting, especially about your comment that you prefer the pics on the Galaxy S3. It wasn't easy to find anything comparable on Google Images to the shot you decided to point out, but I found a pic of a dog on some grass. Note that in this picture the grass is even closer to the camera, but it looks far worse than the grass you pointed out in the Xperia Z photo

Galaxy S3 100% crop
Would you mind taking a moment to find some pics taken from the Galaxy S3 which you feel show off its quality so we could try to compare them against what we're seeing on the Z?
BTW, I felt I should include a couple of 100% crops from that selection that hush posted on XDA that show off just how good things can be with the Xperia Z camera. I won't say every single picture under every circumstance will be as sharp and have this level of noise, but we've gotta look at the best along with the worst:
Anyways, now that these phones are falling in the hands of proper review sites, it shouldn't be long before we get quality review samples as well as comparisons to other top end phones.

Another video showing off the burst mode:

Note that when he goes into the settings of the camera to set burst speed and hence the quality, the 3 options are HIGH 1280x720 (16:), MIDDLE 3920x2204 (16:9) and LOW 1920x1080 (16:9)
I must say those are some odd options there. I can't figure out how the middle one is the highest resolution...
EDIT.
Also a video comparison between the Z and iPhone 5. The Z is quite a bit sharper, but the person taking the video should have tried to shoot the scenes together rather than wildly panning each phone about

Ah well, I'm sure we'll see plenty more soon

That dog was shot at ISO-100 and I'm complaining about ISO 40 shots=done in best lighting conditions. But maybe it's due to the sensor? Maybe I was expecting wonders form that Exmor RS? |

No,they clearly show the Sony Z being the better image. And you should also start looking at your photos normally rather than zooming in all the time I think your being a little bit picky Marcink. I think you will find MOST cameras when zoomed in 100% crops will show up like that. The Sony image clearly shows better 100% crop than the Samsung

Fair enough, but unless you can provide us some samples from other comparable camera sensors that show they are ahead of the Xperia Z, then I don't know how you can argue that it isn't a step forward.
Not every single pic taken with the Z will be amazing, the results are of course dependant upon the photographer and the settings they choose almost as much as the camera quality itself. Other than getting a person who knows what he's doing to setup each camera to highlight its strengths (that will eventually come) I suppose the best we can do is see what the cameras do on default auto settings. So far the Z seems to be doing pretty good overall. Of course we've gotten kind of a mixed bag of photos lately though, but some of these various units are likely still pre-production models without the final software, and it could be some of the people have been mucking about with some settings like HDR and whatnot.
Can't wait for proper photo tests to be done |

@vivftp, the galaxy S III photo You posted here is taken with digital zoom, You can clearly see the extrapolation. Not a good one to compare is it? |

I read the site where the guy posted it and he didn't make any mention of zooming in or anything like that, so I had to assume it was a normal pic he took with his new phone.
If you can suggest some better pics, then by all means. It was pretty hard to find a pic that was reasonably similar to the one marcink chose to talk about. |
