It's come a long way in 5 years. I wonder where it will be in 5 years time - it's certainly made other OS's pull their socks up.

It certainly has come a long way, and matured into one powerful OS, blending a great UI with a ton of features, some of which many of us liked in older OSs that other new OSs will probably never get, and cutting edge hardware and no matter how much Apple, Microsoft and Nokia try to kill it it seems to just get even bigger and better 
Android now owns 75% of the market globally and with its penetration into Africa and other developing economies, its going to be difficult for any others to try dethrone it.
By the way, i see some of the latest Androids like Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, Nexus 4, Note2, have whats known as a Barometer sensor, why on earth do smartphones need a damn Barometer?

I read somewhere that is to help with gps performance - I can see why I guess.
The best thing about Android is the range of great hardware out there. The choice is endless and always newer and better things coming along.

That explains a lot, GS3 locks onto GPS ridiculously fast even when cell network is crap, i thought it was due to GLONASS but i guess its a mix of everything: Compass, aGPS, GPS, GLONASS, Gyro and Barometer working together, truly amazing how to see how far Android smartphones have come. Went through the Android developer site the other day and went dizzy with all the other stuff we got in the 4.0 and 4.1 updates: http://developer.android.com/[....]ns/android-4.0-highlights.html and http://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html

I wouldn't call Android a "great" UI ... since its up to the partners to fully modify it as they see fit with minimal restrictions to be allowed to use Google's Apps/Services.
HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc etc all augment the UI which changes the UX (User Xperience) considerably and their perception of the overall OS. Google has made great strides to unifying the UI since ICS 4.0 and currently in JB 4.2.
I'm very curious if even one OS compares in speed to and augmentation capability as rapidly? Hmmm. S60/Symbian back in the 7650 heyday maybe?
