But why? What's the point? I want Sony to use the highest quality everything. If they downgrade the screen, they will completely defeat the purpose of a smartphone designed to be the best that Sony has to offer.
I hope for their sake they don't downgrade the screen at all. In fact I hope they upgrade it. Triluminos, X-reality, wide colour gamut, highly accurate screen calibration (on the level of their Bravia TV's, with options to calibrate the screen yourself a la XZL), exceptional viewing angles. Ridiculously high contrast ratio; brightest whites and deepest blacks etc.
I want to buy this phone, cause I'm due an upgrade, but I'll only buy it, if its up to snuff.

I can't share that at this moment.

Well what's the point of having a camera centric phone without Xenon? Same thing I guess... |

I wouldn't be surprised if they downgrade the display unit. When people buy Xperia Z with crappy display it's not logical to increase the cost and decrease the profit. |

OK. I don't think any reason is a valid one.

Well. May as well downgrade everything then. May as well downgrade the camera sensor to a standard one. May as well downgrade the SD800 to a SD600 and underclock it to boot.
Xenon, I could live without to an extent. But a downgraded screen? Its the point at which we interface. When we use a smartphone, we look at the screen. Above everything else;including the camera, the screen should be the number 1 priority. Use the highest quality screen possible, then worry about everything else.

So will it be a regional thing? like a screen lottery? |

Could be a bunch of reasons, cost, shortage of higher end panels to meet demand, higher end panels not meeting quality control specs for sony, such as colour reproduction, durability, thinness, power requirements, etc.
anything better than a Z screen will be welcomed, but Z level on a high end will not cut it.
I do wonder if perhaps the SD800 yield from qualcomm is not high enough intitially?
ha perhaps apple bought so much screen capacity that so there might not be enough to go around for the rest.

I think we should applaud Sony for stepping up the spec-race (even if many of you don't think that matters), Sony now has the first S800 device by any major manufacturer. It may be a niche device but still, Sony is seriously getting some respect by the tech press & tech crowd that influence a lot of family, friends etc. Sony is becoming a trend-setter, good design, great spec and range of screen sizes, leader in water-proof etc.
BTW, we've just reached 800 pages at the same time as Sony announced the first device with the Snapdragon 800.
