Apple unveils the latest version of its iPhone this Wednesday. It will be the first since the death of Steve Jobs.

To mark the occasion the BBC asked Dan Lyons, Newsweek magazine's technology editor and creator of the satirical blog, The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs, to pen an article about the firm's progress over past year.

This is his provocative view.

".....The problem is that the new iPhone won't really give you much more screen real estate than the old one. Worse, it looks ridiculous.

Apple also has become a copycat in tablets. Jobs once said the iPad's 9.7in screen was the perfect size, and smaller tablets made no sense. Then the Android camp had success with 7in tablets like Amazon's Kindle Fire and Google's Nexus 7, and now Apple supposedly will announce its own smaller iPad in October. Talk about thinking different!

What else is there to complain about?

Um, Siri still doesn't work. The oft-rumoured Apple TV doesn't exist yet, presumably because media companies won't let Apple take over their business.

The latest batch of Apple ads were such embarrassing garbage that Apple to take them down from YouTube. Apple's new guy in charge of retail launched a plan to lay off workers and boost profits, then had to walk it back when people pointed out that this was stupid.

The big $1bn (£650m) patent "victory" over Samsung made Apple look like a bully, and also raised awareness of how good Samsung's latest products are.

Last month, Samsung's Galaxy S3, with its huge 4.8in screen, outsold the iPhone 4S in the United States, the first time any smartphone has outsold the iPhone in the States.

Apple got where it was by taking bold risks. Now it has become a company that copies others and plays it safe.

A company that once was run by a product visionary now is run by a number-cruncher - chief executive Tim Cook, whose claim to fame involves running an efficient supply chain and beating ever lower prices out of Asian subcontractors and component suppliers.

To use a car analogy, six years ago the iPhone was like a sexy new flagship model from BMW or Porsche. Today it's a Toyota Camry. Safe, reliable, boring. The car your mom drives. The car that's so popular that its maker doesn't dare mess with the formula.

Steve Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976. He stepped down as chief executive in August, 2011.
Apple seems less interested in blowing people away than it is in milking profit out of the existing lineup. At this Cook is doing marvellously well."

Wow,when put like that it says alot. The GS3 outselling the iPhone in US no wonder Apple wants them banned. It no longer is the next big thing anymore and the so called Apple dominance is fading cos look at how Android keeps growing. Phone Dog website recently said the iPhone recently slipped out the top ten whilst GS3 went top. When today is the the new iPhone announced??

Funny article! I bet he was trying to get a bit of fame with all this.

Anyways, its no new trend that phone sales get lower when new phone is about to be announced. Surprisingly, many seem to be unaware of it. But anyhow, I dont think its considered an achievement if a recently released mobile outsold a year old phone. I think samsung is aware of it, and hence its for 99$ for a "limited time".

The problem with the iPhone is that
When a new one comes out it sells bucket loads
So it prob outsell the Galaxy 3 typically!

The iPhone 5 will have 4G so that maybe its
USP it will do well in the UK I think as now 4G
Has begun on EE

The Convention Starts at 1pm today in San Fransisco
There about 9hrs behind the UK lol

So we prob won't hear the Goss of we need to
Later this evening or tomorrow

@Miss UK,Samsung has already prepared the GS3 LTE version for the UK. It's on GSM Arena today. I couldn't care less if a phone outsells another it's what I want that matters and it's certainly not anything made by Apple.

I would simply put it this way, when first iPhone was launched, it was unique in its own way. There were not many phones like iPhone nor Android was any challenging against iOS.

Now things have changed drastically. Look at Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC and even Xiaomi Phone 2 are way better with the size and specs. Even the iOS has started to look for features from Android like notifications and calendar.

I honestly don't think copying is a bad idea unless you make it sensible and worth it. An OS job is to make things easier and simple for a user which makes his job quick and effective. Why we need a smartphone? Because it acts as many devices all in one. It acts as camera, phone, mini computer (browsing Internet), music player etc. the more the features, the user can use the smartphone at its best.

Now here's what Google does is, tries to make things that helps the user in day to day life while apple is concentrating more and more on its OS. It brands it's OS no matter it helps you or not. It does not care about your convenience. You have to iTunes. You have to download files from your computer, I'm sorry I won't allow you to download music files or torrents or video files from Safari. I'm sorry, my iOS does not allow that, like it or not. But that's day to day thing. If I like a song, why can't I download it? Why do I have to jailbreak? I'm a normal user, I don't know anything about computers so where do I go from here? All these little things, it doesn't matter to Apple. It's only about their design, quality and their own closed OS.

We certainly want innovation when it comes to design & quality but after the necessities. It's stupid if you can't give what helps users and lure them with quality and design.

Edit: And let's say Samsung indeed copied iPhone, its a product that is sensible and helpful. Not that it's the same. It's copied for a better product than what iPhone can deliver. Not saying Samsung did copied but if it did, it's worth it!

@Indiandawg,

True, but it did bring a lot of improvements as well. I think they have remained competitive in the smartphone space especially against windows and blackberry. The best thing about android is you can do whatever you want, but not everyone is like us.

There are quite a few features which I would like in other phones too such as the battery life, the new dock and the bsi front facing camera. Its nice to see that they didn't focus only on bumping up screen size and cpu/gpu.
