Telecoms regulator Ofcom has allowed Everything Everywhere, the owner of the Orange and T-Mobile networks, to use its existing bandwidth to launch fourth-generation (4G) mobile services.

The move means 4G, which allows much faster downloads, could launch in the UK earlier than previously planned. Ofcom said the move would deliver "significant benefits" to consumers that outweigh any competition concerns. But Vodafone and O2 expressed surprise and disappointment at the decision.

Ofcom plans to auction 4G bandwidth to other providers next year.

Everything Everywhere will be allowed to offer 4G services from 11 September.

Apparently, they have done the network testing and LTE could be good to go on.their current network before the end of the year. Sweet! All we need is the hardware now.

Yes and Opoo & Vodamoan are moaning cos they are left out. But both those networks are crap for 3G anyway. Will 4G signal be stronger and penetrate buildings better?? T Mobile/Orange seem to be the best right now for coverage. Also 4G=worse battery life?? I do wish they'd get rid of the name Everything Everywhere it's awful

4G and more capacity can't come quick enough. I have been using Three for a long time and most of the time they are great but it seems networks are becoming strained. I get alot of network busy tones and dropped calls plus MMS not sending. Data runs slow at peak times too. Three said that they have about 75 terra bytes of data per day on their network. That's alot. Come on 4G!! I might move back to T Mobile

I don't think there is any 4G handsets sold in the UK currently
only 4G thing that supports that would be a iPad III

either that or visit USA and buy a 4G Phone from there

I guess they will be coming to us eventually btw

As part of the deal Everything Everywhere(stupid name) starting 4G early Ofcom has told them to sell some 1800 spectrum to Three.
