ICS is much more hungry than Gingerbread which sadly affects the performance of my Ray.
Now I have device which is more laggy, had couple of refreshes and regular freezes on home screen and even force closing of Home app twice for 24 hours which I never had before with 2.3.
I didn`t manage to terminate Apps from memory or cashe which I did with 2.3 it`s strange but now I have 100 - 120MB of free RAM, and before I manage to have free RAM up to 220MB. It`s not good for me.

The only thing that is worth having is the browser - it` far more fluid, much more faster (on loading and scorling) and feature proof than before. I also like full screen mode and side menus. I did`nt like the way it works with blured text and white spaces when zooming but it work faster so I have no complains after couple of hours.

The worst thing with this upgrade is battery life - it is double less than before.

I would say overall ICS is no worth upgrading for 512RAM devices just for better browser - Sony's Gingerbread is much better overall than ICS.

PS: it looks like they rushed things with ICS - some system windows and messages are stock ICS (which I kinda like) but they don`t fit at all with overall UI.

@argiriano
Go to settings/applications/all applications and disable all apps you don't need or use
You will increase the ram available and enjoy your Ray !

ICS is rather slow upon initial setup and startup, but once you've disabled apps you don't need and once the phone's been booted already for a bit, it's plenty fluid.

I recommend using non-stock launcher. For example Apex Launcher (you can get it from the Market). It's more customizable and it's build on the newest SDK so it's a native ICS app. Using it on my SGS2 with no problems.

I think it can't be helped, Fluid ICS experience on 512MB smartphones is really impossible, SE's mistake here was that they didn't used much higher RAM on their 2011 lineup. unless SE used the same approach like what Nokia did back in their symbian days, Demand Paging

But then what about my Xperia U Dual Core Sony phone which is new but has 512 RAM?? Why would Sony release a phone with 512 RAM knowing it will be not so good with ICS??

Id actually like to go back to gingerbread on my Neo V.

SE had to release the ICS update, otherwise the general public would have flipped out!!

However, they did say there may be some performance issues due to the 'older' hardware. And frankly, I have to agree with them!

So really all future ICS handsets should really be released with 1 gig of RAM?? Whatever the manufacturer?? HTC seems to manage it and Samsung with budget handset so why not Sony?? I hope my Xperia U will be ok with 512 RAM being only just come out this week. I'd be happy to leave my Xperia U on GB as so far not a single issue with it at all.

Perhaps the new Kernel could help alleviate the RAM shortage on the ICS build on Xperia U. SE has stated before that the biggest imposing challenge on updating 2011 Xperia phones to ICS was the RAM limitations, as even the reference of all ICS phones: the Galaxy Nexus had 1GB of it. I'm pretty sure ICS would be fine on a Single Core SoC, as the software is more GPU-accelerated, and since it's GPU-heavy it will need more Graphics Buffer by which it will have some portions of the RAM taken. this scenario is very much different with PCs wherein GPUs have discrete VRAMs.

I think it's because Samsung/HTC budget end ICS phones have low res screens which resulting to much less graphics RAM buffer needed. ST21 tapioca will arive with ICS out of the box but then again it has low res display (HVGA) so the 512MB ram won't be much of an issue. Google really needs to develop some sort of "paging" on their next android builds. but OEMs must use SLC based NAND flash memory to compensate for the "slower" read/write performance.

Yes think it should. I got rid of alot of the bloatware Sony put in the U and now have less crap running in background. When my U is on standby not running any apps I have 220mb of RAM left

Well sony will be updating to android 4.0.4 for the 2011 handsets except for play which is a good news. Imo, I will wait to see how desire c workd in real life to actually believe what sony says about 512mb not being enough, and I am pretty sure that the next android will be much more optimized, then will sony update the play and other handsets to it? Since it will still be within 18 months since the phones were released.
