It has a HD screen super amoled but uses pentile matrix which means less sub pixels so not quite the sharpness it could have had

Yes the older Galaxy S has Pentile Matrix display which means although it's still the same resolution say 800x480 it looks more pixelated up close as it has few sub pixels. My Nokia Lumia is the same too but it does not make it look bad at all just less sharp a little. But on the Note you would really fail to notice it as it has a higher HD display

Yep. My mother has a Galaxy S and I can see pixels when viewing the display very closely. I can't distinguish any pixels on my Galaxy S II despite the latter's lower PPI.

I guess Samsung made a trade-off while designing the phone, instead of going for qHD, they opted the Galaxy S's screen resolution but with a standard RGB matrix instead of going PenTile which many phones with a qHD panel had adopted.

Expect a "Super AMOLED HD Plus" in the Galaxy S III, now that would be a proper 720p screen.

The Galaxy Note has a HD800P display (1280x800) same res as most 10" tablets, so its got a high DPI even at 5.3" it looks stunning, its not a regular 720p like the Galaxy Nexus.

But the more fascinating thing is that the Note has a higher screen resolution than some laptops (namely netbooks). Heck, my laptop has a 1280x800 display.
