One of the most notoriously popular media uploading and downloading sites in the world has been shut down today amid allegations of piracy and charges amounting to $500 million in lost revenue for pirated content. These charges come from federal prosecutors in Virginia and are being leveled against the founder and others involved with the site. If found guilty, needless to say, Megaupload’s owners will stand no chance of revival any time soon.

Hackers retaliate over Megaupload website shutdown (BBC article)

Hackers have targeted the US government and copyright organisations following the shutdown of the Megaupload file-sharing website.

The Department of Justice (DoJ), FBI and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) among others have been bombarded with internet traffic.

Web links have been been distributed which, when clicked, make the user's computer part of the attack.

I see the beginning of a war. If they starting shutting down other file sharing services, the attacks will get worst.

I think that regardless of whether SOPA and PIPA get ratified (and I hope they don't), there will be alot more sites like this being taken down.

Megaupload effect: FileSonic drops file sharing, Uploaded.to drops the US (Digital Trends article)

FileSonic.com has cut all file-sharing features from its services, and Uploaded.to has severed access for users in the United States. The amputations follow Thursday’s international takedown of Megaupload.com and its top brass, an operation orchestrated by the US government.

Did someone park a tank on Kim DotCom's lawn? (c|net article)

Days after police in New Zealand arrested Kim DotCom, the founder of cyberlocker service MegaUpload and accused pirate, journalists were chasing reports that a tank was parked on the front lawn of his Auckland home.

...
the tank was a fake--albeit a good one. What people saw on DotCom's lawn was an inflatable, life-size balloon made to look like a Soviet-era T-72 Russian battle tank.
