Vita OS? I'm a bit skeptical with this, why do Sony have to make this when we already have PSM?

any links for that?

It's not really recent, but it's been said by kaz hirai that it could be used in the future. I am actually up for it since Vita os is really efficient and It could be a good competition, i.e if they improve the browser and some minor annoyances..

Why do mint and hayabusa look really similar? I have a feeling one of them might get cancelled or be available on specific markets?

The prospects of Vita OS are interesting. The other day, I got a chance to play with Vita and the OS is super smooth, much smoother than Android on any phone I have seen, including the S3. It could be a great idea to put it on a phone or a tablet, but I don't think Sony is in a great position to do that at the moment.

I believe it all depends on how successful PlayStation Mobile will be. If in a year or two, PSM gets a decent amount of apps and games, it will be easier to launch Vita OS on phones as there will be apps ready for users at launch. The Vita OS can be optimized by Sony to make good use of hardware. They already do a great job in optimizing Android for their phones, imagine what they can do with their own OS!

Please.stop.dragging the discussion.off-topic.
And please stop talking about the 2012 designs as if they're factually bad, I for one love the elegant, minimalist designs of 2012. Even if they were bad, its not Sony's fault (Sony actually has an extensive design legacy). Phones take at least 18 months to go from concept to production. So everything from 2012 and maybe even some of 2013, is by Sony Ericsson.

Vita OS on Xperias is a bad choice at this time, IMO. Sony doesn't have the mobile marketshare to attract developers and that's one of the main selling points of a smartphone OS. Plus, the Vita OS as it is lacks the specialisation for phone tasks and use that Android has steadily built up under Google R&D.
Additionally, the hardware on the Xperias isn't nearly powerful enough to run Vita games or probably even the interface as smoothly as the PSV does. Even WP8 would be a better choice at this stage.

^I beg to disagree. What do you call the developers who are making games for the PS Vita and about 1.8 million people who own PS Vita to date? These figures are significant enough for Sony to really pursue in expanding the PS Vita OS into smartphones and tablets. In fact, PS VIta OS has more established ecosystem compared to WebOS Enyo and Meego. Best example is the itunes-like Sony Entertainment Network, which allows users to download games, music and videos. Plus, Sony has more experienced in developing OS'es compared to other manufacturers as they once produced top-end Palm PDA's and one of the Symbian OS makers. As we all know, PS Vita is an expandable platform and has quite a similar closed-ecosystem like the iOS and free of fragmentation, which I think would attract more developers in the long run compared to Android.

Windows Phone 8 is great but how is going to benefit Sony? Will Microsoft allow Sony WP 8 phones to connect to Playstation 3? How about the SEN? I do not think that it is a win-win situation for both if Sony decides to make a Windows Phone as they have conflicting interests!

As I said, the Vita is a very powerful machine. Phones won't be able to run the majority of games (or none) developed for it. As for the userbase - 1.5 million Vitas is nothing compared to Android's soon-to-be 1 billion activated devices. Developers aren't going to waste their breath unless somehow sponsored. Seeing how Sony's haemorrhaging money, I don't think that's gonna happen on a significant scale.

The reason Apple was so successful with their own private OS was because its interface was so novel at the time and intuitive to use. That's how they gained market power and brand recognition in the mobile space, which they are still surfing on. In comparison, I actually find the Vita interface to be even a bit clunky and not well-designed at all.

Plus, it's going to take some development to adapt the OS to mobile phones. These are all very unnecessary risks that Sony shouldn't be undertaking right now, when Android's proven to be a very popular and, in fact, free OS to use.

How many of those billions of activated Android devices run the latest version of the OS? Do all of the Android devices are able to run hundred of thousand apps from Google Play? Actually most of the android phones sold lately are low-end to mid-end smartphones that are not optimized for high quality games and popular apps! So what is the advantage there?

Sony for sure will find out how to work things out in transporting games from PS Vita. Besides, it is not that Sony is going to stop making Android phones. They are just going to make Vita OS phones at the same time. Yes, developing PS Vita phone is going to cost them some money. But it will benefit them in the long term when another turn around in the mobile market happens, like in the time when suddenly iPhone became a sensation and Sony and everyone had no answer to it.

PS Vita OS will give more flexibility to Sony in integrating their technologies in smartphones and tablets that they make. Thus, helping them create innovative exclusive mobile products to offer the market as well as ensuring profitability by providing unified and big ecosystem for multiple Sony products.

As you I have said before, the ecosystem that Apple created for its mobile products is what has made them the most successfull among the competition.

Older members, correct me if I'm wrong, but every year in this thread there is one stand out poster who hangs around for most of the year absolutely determined to spin everything with a silver lining. I'm thinking back to users like PK and back2you (sorry randomuser, but I'm looking at you this year). Their posts often include the bright side of sales reports, obscure rumours from foreign threads, 'insider' info and " " at any picture not leaked by them. Then for all their love of the brand they completely disappear after a year.

I'm thinking these people are S/SE employees sent out with the brief to cause a stir between and before announcements and calm any bad reactions afterwards.

Am I onto something new here or did I miss something?

Right from the start of the Hayabusa/Mint rumours it was suggested that one would be compat with US side LTE bands and likely to be only available in the US. Which is which though has been lost in a myriad of confusing and conflicting leaks from supposed insiders from all over the globe.

If there's one thing that's surely attractive about Vita OS on a developer's perspective, it's the fact that Vita games can and will be much superior to anything else in the market when it comes to games. and in fact Sony already win the support from the major game developers who pledges support for the platform (Square Enix, Capcom, Ubisoft, EA, Bandai Namco, Gameloft to name some). and for android platform, I'd say it's too fragmented to please the devs, despite how powerful the hardware they can get. iOS on the other hand has a more unified developer ecosystem, but its too limited by the touchscreen, FPS games for example are going to be uncomfortable when implemented on an iPhone/iPad's screen. Vita OS provided that Sony will not ditch the hardware gamepad which is it's biggest advantage, will easily make the platform the gamer/developer's choice.

@Ricky D:

nice analysis out there, we shouldn't also forget about Mizzle, Angelo(Beta tester), and Xell

Actually I believe Mizzle and Xell may have themselves seen proto devices sent out to bloggers for review and both have poked their heads in here for more than one period, which is not exactly what I meant.

I doubt we'll see Vita OS in many if any devices 'soon'. If there is going to be something it will likely be the Xperia Play follow up and not one of the mass market money makers like Hayabusa should be.

Perhaps we'll see the revival of Cybershot phones once SM merges with them as what Hira-san is doing now. same thing applies with the Playstation division. hopefully everything goes unified sooner than we expected.

I've often wondered how many people here might be Sony employees in disguise

As for the Vita OS, I think that it would be a great idea for Sony to get it launched next year. They'll have PSM around by this year to help build their app ecosystem, and they can target their Vita OS phones and tablets to the gaming market. It's possible that they could also target non-gamers with these devices, but I guess that would depend on how good the hardware is and if PSM and Sonys own developed apps can offer something that users just can't get on other OS's.

It would be VERY interesting if Sony were to stay in Android, but also develop phones/tablets under Windows, and get Vita OS out there. I don't know if that would spread them too thin, but it'd most certainly help to increase their market presence.

I think ever since esato was born we always have someone knowledgable popping out of nowhere to quench out thirst for rumors

but I guess that would depend on how good the hardware is and if PSM and Sonys own developed apps can offer something that users just can't get on other OS's.

Vita OS already have the following advantage

Vita OS vs Android
more unified ecosystem for develoeprs, as android suffers grealty from fragmentation, also android games written in native code have compatibility issues across different SoCs which defeats the WORM approach proposed by Google on 2007

Vita OS vs iOS
Vita OS have support for major game developers, some of which are not yet developing games for the iOS, also there's a limit on what games you could play on an iPad, and should Vita smartphones also include gamepad like the Play, then everything will be possible.

It would be VERY interesting if Sony were to stay in Android,

I'm sure they will, I don't really care if Sony smartphones don't get the latest android version to run the new games developed for android, as they will always trail behind iOS on development. and besides PSM will offer more and more high quality games for the platform than Android could ever offer.

but also develop phones/tablets under Windows, and get Vita OS out there.

not so far from now expect M$ to lock down windows phone from 3rd party game platform such as the PSM. it's impossible to see WP8 with Xbox Live be able to run PSM games as well. especially since WP8 and Windows 8 have shared Core, so it means apps for WP8 will also run for Windows 8 and PSM games will also run on Windows 8 as well. sounds too good to be true. and M$ would surely not allow such thing to happen if they cared alot for the Xbox gaming.

I don't know if that would spread them too thin, but it'd most certainly help to increase their market presence.

Good if it's going to happen, but If I were Steve Bald-mer I won't allow my greatest competitor to share the success I might have on the Windows platform

Quoted for specific context.

I completed agree about Sony spreading themselves way tooo thin. I believe Vita was a way to bring their PS3 gaming to the portable space (continuing where PSP left off), and its a great piece of kit. The reason Vita exists is because of limited support from other hardware manufacturers just registering for certification of playstation portable gaming and its not really up to par just yet. Not like iOS gaming is - don't laugh iOS gaming is on 3 major devices and in less than a year of highlighting gaming its KILLING the mighty Nintendo. Now all mobile smartphones are having their way with Nintendo.

Android as an OS is FREE to use - from its source code basics.
implementing:
Drivers for BaseBand Radios (various providers, various WLAN stacks via different chipsets).
DSP's for audio playback of music via speakers or headphone ranges,
Display resolutions - yes the basic kernel supports everything, BUT the screens are VERY different!
storage (internal / external has been made easy).
et cetera et cetera.
^ THIS takes a LOT of research and development: engineers, licensing deals with components purchased, hours worked on, agreements and testing with providers ... it ALL ads up! IF it didn't smaller players in teh Android ecosystem like Huwaii, Sony, etc would be just as sought after as Samsung is right now.
