We are only talking about current market cap. As far as total assets go Sony has more than 5 times the asset value of Qualcomm. So yes Sony is the bigger company but its market cap is CURRENTLY less than that of Qualcomm. If we compare only total assets then Sony is even bigger than Apple. But that's not important, market cap is.
Also if we compare equity of both companies

Qualcomm Total Equity 2011 - 20.858 billion $
Sony Total Equity 2011 - 30.74 billion $

back to the phones!!!

i'm surprised we haven't really heard anything about mint.. not even rumored specs. i really hope it's worth waiting for. worst case scenario, i suppose i'll pick up a XP at a lower price at that time or a hayabusa if it's all that it's looking to be...

Nikolaus Scheurer Sony Mobile’s Director of Marketing and Planning was interviewed recently by GSMArena.

First regarding flagships Mr Scheurer basically admits that The Xperia S will be the the flagship for six months with another coming out in the second half of the year.

I’m basically implying there will be a new flagship earlier than this because that’s how the market is, right? The Xperia S will be an absolute flagship product, even a half year in and hopefully as well a year from now, we will drive this as an absolute aspiration of the product and it will be portrayed like a hero to our brand. But at the same time you will see product refreshes, new technology, new services, even more Sony going forward.

They have realized that 1 year is too long to come out with a new flagship and he further goes into how this new flagship will come about being a design refresh or same design with new and higher specs to differentiate.
--------

I’m not ruling it out, but there could be something that also expresses the same design philosophy in a different way. I mean, even in half a year, components will change, technical capabilities will change, maybe even the perception of an end consumer in the top end…what you value more. What design traits you value more, services, performance of the device, We want to bring something new to the market.

He reiterates that they promised and will deliver Ice Cream Sandwich to 2011 Xperia Devices and implies that all devices coming out from summer should have it right of the gate.
--------

But it doesn’t matter because we promised, and this is what will stay true, is that from the summer on we will upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Ice Cream Sandwich to Star roll-out in April.

we really will upgrade all of our portfolio based on Android to Ice Cream Sandwich. So we’re basically starting now in April, to roll that out so every single Android device, back down to the Xperia base from Sony Ericsson, but as well as Live with Walkman based on Android, will see the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. That is a reassurance for a consumer of a Sony Xperia smartphone: the upgrade will come.

Dude. Get your facts straight -

http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/AAPL:US
Apple is with almost 150 billion in assets not to mention almost 90bil in cash alone!!!

http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/6758:JP/balance-sheet
Sony is just under 14billion as of sept 2011

The reason why the Mint won't have a quad core CPU is that this year there won't be any Cortex A15 quad core chipsets out by anyone. And it makes no sense using Cortex A9 quad core chip when its easily outperformed by A15 dual core.

So I think the Mint may have a higher clocked Qualcomm krait possibly a 1.7ghz MSM 8960 PRO with Adreno 320 GPU. And the 28nm Cortex A15 chips from TI, ST-Ericsson and others will be available only in 2013. So Qualcomm is the only choice for Sony.

I think the premium price may have to do with use of OLED, premium materials, maybe 2GB RAM, and greater internal memory maybe 64gb and the second generation EXMOR R 13 mp camera with HDR video.

Where are you getting this information from??
Texas instruments originally targeted q1 of 2013; yet announced live via MWC that they'll ship late Q4 of 2012! Their the premier Arm partner and have been for over 15yrs. I really doubt they'll slip without a reliable source stating so - if not them themselves.

Feb 2012
http://www.bloomberg.com/news[....]sor-coming-in-second-half.html

Sept 9th 2010 - proof of being a premier partner.

“As a long-term key partner, TI has worked with ARM for 17 years to innovate
and deliver more than 3 billion ARM processor-based system-on-chip (SoC)
devices. As an advanced lead partner and first licensee of the Cortex-A15
MPCore processor, we look forward to leveraging the Cortex-A15 core to deliver
industry-leading processors that will provide the high performance demanded by
the next generation of connected devices, all within a low-power envelope.
When pairing the Cortex-A15 MPCore processor with TI’s SmartReflex™ 3
technology, future OMAP applications processors will yield a 60 percent
reduction in power, enabling TI to continue delivering the industry’s most
energy-efficient, high-performing solutions. We also see the potential for
broader market implementations, leveraging the Cortex-A15 core for home
entertainment and multimedia applications,” said Remi El-Ouazzane, vice
president, OMAP platform business unit, TI.

@Prom1

September is not Q4 2012. So even if TI can ship OMAP5 in Q4 the Mint cannot use it. End of discussion.
And as for your earlier post, read again. I said "Total Assets" not Net tangible assets.

Ah. Didn't know the launch date was September for this rumored device -thought 2nd half of 2012 was projected. If I'm right then TI's or even Samsungs A15 chips would be valid.

Total assets is what I linked not net tangibles.

Total Assets 12,869,832.00 12,924,988.00 13,009,766.00 12,866,114.00
^ that is by each quarter for Sony ending Sept 2011 in my link above. What number are you referring to as net tangibles, Apple? You'd be wrong there too -click on balance sheet tab.

Back on topic, is Mint going to be delayed or is Sony currently sampling chips.

Here you go.
http://www.wikinvest.com/stoc[....]8SNE%29/Data/Total_Assets/2011
http://www.wikinvest.com/stoc[....]AAPL%29/Data/Total_Assets/2011

Apple 2011 Annual Total Assets - 116.37 billion $
Sony 2011 Annual Total Assets -155.95 billion $

And why would you say Mint could be delayed ? I don't think its delayed. The Qualcomm S4 pro will be ready by the time Mint hits stores. Nothing for Sony to worry.

And its not like TI or Samsung A15 solutions could be better. Qualcomm krait is highly competitive and I believe it will be better than TI OMAP5 and Samsung A15 overall. Also don't forget its not just about the chips but also how well the chip is optimized. The Qualcomm S3 we all know wasn't as good as Samsung Exynos or TI OMAP 4430/4460. But the Xperia S with S3 beats phones with the above mentioned SoCs easily. So even if OMAP 5 or Exynos 5250 are slightly better than S4, Sony optimization will make sure the gap is filled easily.

We shouldn't hold our breath for the MSM8960 Pro It's not Sony's style to use the latest hot off the press chips, I'd expect the MSM8960 (the same used in the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity and the HTC One XL) to be much more likely.

Either way I' going to be too bothered so long as the feel of the product and it's interface is right.

Xperia S is really slick and it's CPU was out over 6 moths ago. Sony have proven they can optimize older chips and make them run like the newest. The chip doesn't matter that much.

Innovation is the key, anyone can use the newest chipset. I'm wondering what new techs and ideas they're putting into the new phones. I'd like to see the snap whilst filming feature from the HTC One X brought over to Sony and I'd like to see better frame rates in the 1080p video. Also less noise in the camera and well constructed bodies. These mean more to the consumers that than the next OMATEGRSM 9990 Pro XL chip with clock speeds that mean nothing to anyone outside of the lab.
I have a dig bick
You read that wrong

I think it actually looks fairly nice. Thank G they didn't use the transparent bar again.

Also, isn't this sort of similar to the U?
