It's more likely to get a mobile virus if you spend time surfing suspicious sites. If you download apps from the Market you are in the bright side.

I have no antivirus.

I have installed Lookout on my phone. Not so much for the malware scanning of newly installed apps, but because I thought I had lost my phone one late night and was looking for a way to locate the phone online the next time. If you loose your phone, visit the Lookout web site and view your device on a map.

The security scan feature is just a bonus for me. Lookout is scanning every app you install and every time you restart your phone. From the app log, I can see that it has scanned 218 apps today and found zero "dangerous" apps

Bear in mind there have been multiple cases of malware found in the Marketplace - although Google clears them out when it finds out about them, it does nothing to prevent them being there in the first place - so relying on the "trusted source" principle doesn't always work.

I use lookout for my mobile too, highly recommend it, i dont think it uses much memory or battery life either.. Plus as Laffen said, it helps you locate your phone too..

I don't use any anti virus but I do have the free "find my iphone" configured on the whole families iphones/ipads in case they get lost/stolen (also helps keep track of my daughter!)

Ive had both Lookout and AVG, currently using AVG and I haven't come across any viruses/malware despite going all out and loading my X10 with a ton of apps and games some of which are just stupid things like the lighter app, so I'd say no.

Speaking of malware in Android Market has anybody read actual complaints from people getting malware on their Androids other than the press releases done by the anti-malware app devs?

Never bothered myself am careful what I download. I used to AVG on my pc but it slowed it down alot. God knows what it would do my phone Also, make sure you un click the option "unknown sources" in settings as this stops any non Market apps downloading.

Trouble with AVG is it leaves too much junk in quarantine & slows things down. Not sure how different it is to pc version.
