Can anyone shed any light on this?? Regarding the basics like in running background apps which tends to use more Android or WM 7.5?? I am thinking of venturing into a WM phone but am unsure of what data is used in background apps on WM especially?? I know Android uses alot aswell as what you may choose to run yourself.

I don't know. Does it really matter? I guess it'll be about the same. WM is build for multitask so you shouldn't notice it in speed.

I think he means Windows Phone.

Its all realy down to how you set it up i guess, just like Android, if you have alot of LiveTiles (WP version of widgets) that update in short intervals im sure you'll have high data consumption in the same way if you have a lot of widgets on your Androids homescreen. At this point i would guess WP eats a little less as it still has limits to its multitasking e.g. it apparently doesnt support background services which Android has, but that may change in future updates.

In WP7.5 you could go to the menu >> Background Apps and then freeze/deactivate any app from working in the background.. Very handy featrure..

Some apps can't be frozen but will get listed.. You can then uninstall them if you'd need to..
In WP you uninstall anything other than the built-in OS apps..

@Tsepz
WP supports background multi-tasking.. Not real time multi-tasking though, same as Android. Only Symbian, Meego, and webOS support real time multi-tasking..

The thing is most of the devs didn't update their apps yet to the Mango state, that's why many apps will restart when launched from the task manager..

The new Mango update supports multi tasking does it not?? I ask this also cos a while ago I think when WP 7 came about there was a bug which caused Windows Phones to send & receive 26% more data. I guess it has been fixed now but it made me curious of how much stuff runs in the background like Android aswell as the live updates & feeds you may add on top of this.

Not sure as i just got my first android and not had a windows but i have a question that is kinda related, hope yoi dont mind me stealing your thread.

Anyways i got a text from o2 telling me that i have used my 500mb of data in 4 days this means i was using (or better said there was being used) 125 per day!

Is there a way to limit which apps use it in the background, as far as i can tell only the weather would use it and it cant use 125 for just that?

Bloody hell 500mb in 4 days Something is wrong there. What did you have running & did you look at running services in settings?? Seriously 500mb with an Android phone are O2 crazy?? I say at least if you have an Android on a contract these days the networks should offer at least 1GB Did you download lots of apps & did you do any streaming??

I've been reading some more and Mango puts background apps on pause, so they use no data at all except for mail and music. 6 apps max

Oh thats good then perhaps i need to do research on this. I no longer use weatjer apps even on my Samsung Wave 2 as its just pointless data and battery use. I just gotta look out the window for the weather.

Exactly

But afaik p900lover had a BlackBerry before ? The BB server uses data compression, so when you're doing the same things on an Android you might be using a lot more data.

Yes indeed. @P900Lover if you are not on a contract(I know you recently bought a HTC Sensation from Amazon)then I recommend a 3UK pay as you go sim. For 15 per month you get 300 mins,3000 texts & all you eat data Very nice tariff & it I were not still in contract I would use that tariff.

I know right that is far too much data in 4 days.

I listened to the radio for a bit one day but not anywhere near that numbers they were giving me.

Apart from that i think it might be the weather app too.

Im going to leave it another few days and have downloaded 3G Watchdog at the recommendation of Miss UK so will see how it goes.

As for my tariff i am on a good o2 contract as i get 30% off from friends a family so the 3 tariff isn't really an option for you. I asked o2 and the last 2 month i had used between 2-300mb on the BB. Maybe i will have to turn the weather off and/or upgrade to 1GB.

BTW what Windows phone are you looking to get?

Am unsure just after so many let downs trying all Xperia models i now get the feeling of trying something new again. Either WM or another Android phone from another brand. Am a bit saddened by it really but SE have lost their magic.

Thats it, what hihihans said, it has limited background services, its Multitasking is more like an iPhone rather than Android. Android uses a combination of both the old Windows Mobile6.5 multitasking and iPhone, Androids can do realtime multitasking but if it runs out of RAM it pauses the app and caches it, thats why if you go to Android's Application Manager open Running Services it shows you apps that are doing realtime multitasking, if you click 'Show Cached apps' it shows you ones that are either paused or simply cached for faster opening time next time you open them.

P900love

Your weather widget cant be the issue, i have the default Android News&Weather widget and my data consumption is nowhere near that high, i have Push Gmail and push Hotmail always on, GPS Data always on with Network assistance, ive got Twitter and Facebook pushing notifications as well as updating their news feeds/timeline every 4hours and i still dont hit 125mb a day, i hit around 45mb a day.

Id suggest you check all your apps dont update too often, e.g set your weather app to update every 4-6hours, social networking clients as well, also go to Settings -Accounts&Sync and see if you have any unecessary apps syncing to often. 500mb in 4days is heavy even for Android.
