My little 5 year old niece has been asking me for a mobile phone so I'm a bit lost on what to get her and since she is so young and this will be her very first phone I cant just get any basic phone so it needs to be child friendly so any recommendations would be helpful.

Because she really wants one and her parents like the idea too Toy ones are just that toys and don't work which defeats the purpose.I have seen child specific ones that don't have a keyboard and just have dedicated mum & dad keys which the parents can pre-programme their numbers into the phone also has panic alert and learning games its this kind of phone im after but they for the u.s market.

Just buy her a yendo in a nice color. Put some music on it for her and block the Internet functions. Its cheap and the pic ideas are clear and easy to use when the kid needs to call someone
With Ericsson and Nokia gone: we must keep their spirits alive and buy JOLLA or YOTA

A nephew of mine had a Foony some years age, those were nice little phones for kids, but I haven't seen them lately, apparently the brand doesn't exist anymore.
But some phones for the elderly also have an SOS-button and the option to pre-programme numbers, they might be suitable for young children aswell.

edit: ITT (Doro) Easy 5:

That Doro is the kind of phone I'm after but something with a screen and a few built in games would be perfect.

sadly, no. my T68/T68i collection is too precious to me... but hopefully it gives some idea that you don't have to go modern when a modern classic will suffice!

Kids these day's aren't like they used 2.
A yendo is a good phone, its good for them to start early.
back in 1991 when i was 6 i had a sony walkman with tapes. I learned to tape tracks from the radio and i knew how to program the VCR. I believe i was around 10years old when we had our first pc running 3.11 sure the games were basic but as young kid i spend alot of time in powerpoint, even making items that weren't in the standard choice (by cutting, ungrouping, grouping, ...)

Its a good thing for them to start young really. My first phone was an Ericsson, since then i've always been a fan of good quality products, and i even found my way to Esato.
So go for it, let the kid be an "early adapter"

Kids these days are very different. I have seen school kids with iphones. I too loved the t68 and t68i remembering waiting outside the Orange store before it opened the day it came out for my upgrade. It was exciting cos of the colour screen. But yeah i think that could be good start for a kid. Funny how things do change as now i am 39 my first phone was back in 1997 the Analogue Nokia Ringo from Tandy store But then i moved to Ericsson.

So your a bit of a collector then just out of curiosity what others do you have?

Your right though a classic like that will do just fine so that one is definitely down on my shortlist.
