HTC are currently making smartphones running on either Windows Phone and Android platform. But like Samsung, HTC are looking into the opportunity to buy an OS of their own

According to the Taiwanese national news agency CNA, HTC's chairwoman Cher Wang told in an interview that the company is considering buying an operating system for their smartphones. No one are using the webOS mobile phone OS any more after HP decided to stop making tablets and smartphones based on the OS. Samsung have earlier been rumored to be interested in the webOS mobile OS and now it seems HTC could be interested as well. We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse Wang said in an interview with a Chinese newspaper. We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform Wang continues. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS. We just have to wish you good luck HTC. We are sure HP, one of the worlds largest manufacture of personal computers have an understanding of OS as well, but that did not automatically make them succeeding with a mobile OS. History tells us that Nokia was good at making both hardware and OS when the OS competition was lower than it is today but as we know, it the success did not last forever. source |

Samsung have done fairly well with Bada but starting out with something new is a big gamble. Be interesting what they will come out with though.

I think they've shown their prowess in this field in the way they've optimised Android's UI. It's one of the better ones on the market.
Good luck to them, it's always good to have an alternative out there and it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

If they really wanted a great UI, they should buy ELSE.

I don't think they will go well with the new plan as their phone are somehow quite "pricey" and i think mobile OS's popularity begin from their low end devices... Just my opinion though...

That was a showstopper, I loved ESE!!
Manufacturers need their own os and HTC is going about it the right way. They are good at software so they will do justice to whatever os they pick.
If SE can raise the funds they should consider buying one too. I would love for them to buy webOS or ELSE.
HP and ELSE needed a mainstream manufacturer in celphone manufacturing and SE can provide that. Obviously they will start slowly until the os can sustain itself.
Their decision to dump UIQ has come back to haunt them.

 had UIQ and that had the potential to be better than Android.
Having a good OS doesn't mean it will be a hit.
Dev support is a big factor now, not just an efficient UI.
Symbian is the PERFECT example of this.
As basic as I feel the Series XX line was, it functioned well... and I felt UIQ was way ahead of its time.
iOS and Android have done something right... which is standardize a platform where almost anyone can build the functions they want into their phones.
HP didn't need ANY help, they were the number 1 PC manufacturer... they already have the name, and yet they couldn't make Palm or webOS work. MS is another example as well. A great OS isn't the END-ALL goal. Support, marketing, public perception and acceptance all come into play.

HP is a PC manufacturer and not a cellphone manufacturer. Sure, they had a few Windows mobile phones but didn't have the following. You need a really good support in term of consumer and as you pointed out developers.
Say, SE buys webOS, and puts out the device and reviewers go crazy about it, that is a positive spin-off which will result in support from the required sectors.
Look at Samsung's strange os, Bada, it has outsold Windows phone out of nowhere.
