Hi, will current dual core or other Android handsets be able to update to Ice Cream Sandwich when it comes out? Will they even get it?

From what I have read, "no".... I understand ICS requires a dual core 1.5 processor or faster. With most phones only being 1GHz processor's Im gussing they will not get the ugrade. Now, you could always root your phone and give it a go yourself to see if it works well or not.

Thats an ABSOLUTE load of pure garbage.
Google made the OEMs sign an agreement that they will keep all current and future devices up to date for ATLEAST 18months, that alone kills that.
Making a minimum requirement of dual-core 1.5GHz would be the worst move, and Google know that, the same sort of rumour had spread about Gingerbread i remember, yet here we are with 600mhz phones with 256mb RAM running it just fine.
As i understand it, all current dual-core Androids will get Ice Cream Sandwich, so will the most recent single cores. The point of Ice Cream Sandwich is to bring together both 2.3.5 Gingerbread and 3.2 Honeycomb (sandwich) together, and also reduce fragmentation, so putting a high requirement like 1.5GHz would be unrealistic. 1.5GHz is most likely where many of the top end droids will be, with a 1280x720p display, those will be a sort of standard for top end ICS droids, just as 800x480 with 1GHz was last year, its not a requirement.

Thanks for that link mlife, I've been wanting a nice complete laid out explanation of what is to be expected in ICS.
Yeah the requirements part I would say is the standard, in the same way that the Nexus One set the bar in late 2009 with 1GHz CPU and 800x480 Res display, but you can find devices that run with 520mhz-600mhz with 256mb RAM that run Gingerbread just fine, I would say system requirements would be a 600mhz CPU with a GPU (as ICS will support GUI acceleration) and 512mb RAM, as Android has to be available on a range of devices that hit a wide variety of price points, its one of the biggest advantages of Android.

@Mlife, I took the above quote from the article that you posted. I believe that that is what you took the requirements from. However I think you misunderstood it.
And from the rest of the article I take it that nearly all if not all current Androids would be upgradeable.

Nope, it will be just silly, Google want to spread Android every where and by using such limits ( dual core or 1.5GHz or 1GB RAM ) they will just kill it from the beginning !!!

from the beginning you need to believe Google plant on having an OS tht fit for devices on future 18months.
imagine having Ice cream sandwich out in oct/ now....and millions of phone using 1Ghz can't use them
this will pissed off millions of phone owner from HTC/Samsung/ LGE/ SE
such approach will make more consumer stay with iOS since their upgrade cycle covers more previous gen of product. |

Guys you are making more and more sense. There is no way Google will make an OS upgrade that won't fit onto the many millions of Androids out there.

The Wildfire S & Samsung Galaxy Ace both run on Gingerbread with 600 & 800mhz processors and the Samsung runs on only 278 ram.
