Wow! What does this mean for other manufacturers of Android powered handsets now that Google will be a competitor? What of Apple?

Technicaly Google are already a competitor with their Nexus phones.
Personaly i think this is EXCELLENT news both for Google and the Android manufacturers , Motorola are veterans in the industry and have racked up quite a large Patent Portfolio so this is not just good for Google.
I hope its true and hope it happens soon, this could be Google's best decision since they got Android.

Listening to the business channels they are touting the patents that Motorola owns and are saying that that is the main reason Google bought the company. Good move.

A very sound and astute move by Google!
As pointed, patents and solid record of phone making are definitely things that will work in Google's favour.
Now they can make their own cellphones and relying on other makers.
Great move by Google!

Will this be the beginning of a whole raft of acquisitions? Apple Corp might begin splashing some cash of its own.
Who's next to be gobbled up?

For sure this is great for Android as it protects Google from Apples suing spree that they have been on. Three cheers for Android.
Look for other companies to be bought up in a continued patent fight.

It wouldn't surprise me, thats the nature of business. Samsung picking up Sony Ericsson? You would think it would want to acquire in it's challenge against Apple.
Manufacturers begin to respond: link.

I think SE may be up for grabs should they post losses now in Q3 and Q4. The final straw would be a loss in Q1 next year.
The patents that Ericsson holds are worth a fortune for any manufacturer who decides to swallow them up.
Another manufacturer that is on that path is Nokia. One is beginning to sort of see that theory that Microsoft was setting Nokia up to fail so that they can buy it dirt cheap. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen but Nokia is really going down badly.

Who would buy SE though i wonder?
I can totaly see MS buying Nokia now more than ever, but i dont like the way they have gone about it as it has come to the expense of many employees, Microsoft will create an even worse reputation of themselves....things are going to get very interesting, im just so glad Google did this now ,that will stop most of the patent trolls.

I see Ericsson, but would Sony really be willing to give up their share of the joint venture? I would surely think more likely Sony would buy out Ericssons share of the company? Would a brand like Sony really want to be owned by say Samsung in their mobile phone sector?

I am willing to bet that Microsoft will be buying one of those guys and soon too. They have about $50 billion in cash plus they could do it in a cash and share purchase and not have to spend all cash.. Nokia is currently worth about $19 billion. Even bought at today's price of $19 billion Microsoft would still have $30 billion to pick up a couple other companies to bolster them.
Microsoft cannot remain a PC centered company as more and more persons are using their mobile phones and tablets and therefore PC's are selling less and becoming a smaller earner for Microsoft.
The question then is when and who not if Microsoft will buy out one of these large mobile phone companies.

Yep, i can see Ericsson being bought, but not SONY, the Japanese have far too much pride.
Would be good if Google bought Ericsson's patents to.
