Gartner has just released its quarterly mobile report, and yes just like we hear every week, Android is stil growing at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about its competitors. Symbian will soon ship less units than Apple and Windows Phone is less than a percent away from getting thrown into the “Others” category According to Gartner, Android shipped around 36.2 million units last quarter, owning 36.0% of the market. Compare that to a year ago when Android shipped 5.2 million units and had a market share of only 9.6%. If Android keeps growing like it’s doing now, our favorite OS could very well power 50% of all smartphones sold at the beginning of next year. On the other side of the coin, Symbian isn’t showing any signs of stopping its year-long free fall towards irrelevancy. The mobile OS shipped close to 27.6 million units in Q1, holding 27.4% of the market. In contrast, Symbian was inside 44.2% of all smartphones sold this time last year. RIM’s Blackberry is not doing that much better either. The platform shipped 13 million units last quarter, which was just 12.9% of all smartphone sales— down from 19.7% a year ago

I remember saying late last year that Android will simply continue to eat away at Symbian's share and overtake it sometime this year, i was then told by some hardcore Symbian fans that it wouldn't happen....err, right.

I'm at a loss as to how Nokia WP possibly could turn things around. They seem to be in freefall.

Indeed Goldenface, and WP isnt showing much growth either, i'm beginning to think Nokia may just carry on falling and by the time the release a WP they maybe pretty much irrelevant in the smartphone space.

Who would have ever believed that Nokia would be fighting for survival. Let's hope they turn things around. I don't like the idea of just a couple of dominating operating systems.

Nokia isn't fighting for survival their are losing the smart phone race. The bet is that with Nokia's long standing recognition in places like India and other parts of Asia and Europe Nokia with WP would be able to make a come back. I am not counting them out until the fat lady sings.

^^ Same here in NL, a lot of teenagers too, one of the reasons being that you can have BIS on Pay-as-you-Go now. The BB Bold 9700 was the best selling phone in the Netherlands in 2010.

Yep, here in South Africa to, BB has blown up, some networks like Vodacom have sold 10times more BBs than iPhones and Androids here in the past year. Its thanks to BIS, BBM and the cheaper 8520 & 9300 models which can be had on very affordable contracts with BIS which means they can use BBM.

here in India too ppl keep taking abt BB only.. and i see many of them buying it also.
rather than iPhone or Nokia.
But nokia still has its Rep in ind.
I dont see many ppl buying Android.Dumb ppl are stuck with Apple or Nokia or BlackBerry.
iPhone is very expensive here so most ppl are buying some BB device.
I see lots of BB ads Here so tht y ppl have started to buy them.
Good marketing is necessary to any successful Phone.

There is a rumor going on suggesting that Microsoft's plan to Buy out NOKIA until year ends.

i think MS can grow a little bit now that they planning to give 7.5 update + Skype Deal and U can Control/play Kinect games using ur phone and they are adding up more office stuff in it.
only MS fans wud plan to buy i guess or we can see what Win8 for phone can give.

Only MS fans And Nokia Fans Can Save each others ASS.
