The ability to stay constantly connected to the internet is making consumers increasingly dependent on the cloud for their daily needs, Ericsson ConsumerLab research has found. And while the smartphone revolution may have started this trend, the research has shown it is app usage that is likely to make it continue. Apps are actually shaping the way people are using connected devices.

Behavior around apps is also creating a new set of expectations when it comes to connecting consumer electronic devices. Devices must be connected if they are to be useful. For example, 54 percent of US users of portable storage devices said that they wanted to be able to synchronize these with their home PC files from anywhere. And 49 percent of camera owners in the sample wanted direct access to secure online storage for their photos.

Michael Björn, Head of Research at Ericsson ConsumerLab, says: "Our research found apps are appealing to people at an emotional level. Consumers become attached to a certain set of apps that makes them feel more in control of their lives, and turns everyday chores into positive experiences. Apps even give consumers a new sense of freedom; if a new situation arises, there’s probably an app out there that could help them."

to be honest, I've been saying the same since the early days of GSM data and then 3G data when it became available. since those days, calling has always become a backstage event compared to the value of data, and data in the cloud (despite recent events) is still the most important aspect of my mobile life

The apps are pushing us to use more and more the cloud based systems. They really offer attractive services which lead us to their usage. I'm not very keen to use them quite much, but I do sometimes.

Data communication has surpassed voice communication a long time ago, as you said masseur.

I do understand peoples concerns though, about putting their data in the "cloud", but I feel its the only way forward and legislation (if you can legislate the cloud!) and acceptability etc will depend on how companies like google etc treat our privacy and data. In the end though I am 100% certain that things will settle so that the cloud becomes the norm... there's really little choice

"Consumers become attached to a certain set of apps that makes them feel more in control of their lives..."
----------
Yet nothing could be further from the truth.
You are being spied on, monetized, analyzed, dissected, categorised...and advertised.

Your private info, and those of your contacts, your dealings with them and so forth has all been out in the open, given freely to faceless corporations so that they may sell to you more effectively, and steal your data with privacy breaches which seemingly is a weekly occurrence these days...
