Sony Ericsson financial results first quarter 2011

The Sony Ericsson Android portfolio is not for everyone. These smartphones are often more expensive than feature phones which is the main reason why the number of shipped phones has decreased in the first quarter compare to last year.

In first quarter 2011, the average selling price for a Sony Ericsson phone was 141 Euro. An increase from 134 Euro in Q1 2010. Historical selling prices are starting from 2007: 134, 121, 120, 134 and now 141 Euro. If we recall correctly, number of phone models in the 2009 Sony Ericsson portfolio was as high as 34 different models. The official online Sony Ericsson store are currently having 9 models in the portfoli whereas 7 are Android (mid- to high-end devices) and only two models are feature phones. According to Sony Ericsson, 60% of the total sales in Q1 2011 was Android devices.

8.1 million phones was sold in the first quarter 2011 which is a decrease of 23% year-on-year. Back in 2007 and 2008, Sony Ericsson shipped more than 20 million units per quarter. In 2010, number of shipped units was 10.5 million.

Sony Ericsson estimate that they have a market share of 5% in number of units sold and 3% in value and are expecting modest growth in global handset market for 2011.

not a good result. over time profit will be reflected by units sold and this only shows that se's smartphones are less popular among the consumers....

se must and shall seriously match or make better their smartphones [hardwares, build quality, physical looks, ui, etc] against their competitors.....

i shall wait what comes after the arc and will always have se's smartphone in my portfolio....Galaxy S II looks so inspiring

Obviously units sold have fallen, but I hardly think its because SE is becoming less popular in the smartphone market. You must remember they havent really released any new phones in a while, the sales of the original x10 family were always going to fall off. Where as companies like Samsung, HTC bla bla have a heap of models, they are obviously going to sell more as time went on.

I agree. I'm actually very surprised they made any profit at all given they hadn't announced a high end phone since the x10 in late 2009. Q2 should be a lot better.

Sony Ericsson, have found it difficult in the recession, as all mobile phone maufacturer's have. Their Smart phones cover alot of different needs for different people and wait until you see the phones coming in the next few years, and they will be way ahead, you'll see ! Major glitches don't hold Sony Ericsson back for long.
They have made phones on all levels.Don't be disheartened by the figures of today.
How cool that they will be launching their own Android tablet, let's hope prices become more affordable all round.
Looking forward and being productive and clever, love you always Sony Ericsson.

Perhaps they'd do better if they paid more attention to customer support.
