My daughters Laptop has a message come up when you power on, that says something like hardrive failure iminent, backup and fit a new hardrive. Are they easy to fit, are they cheap, and are they all the same size.
This is her laptop.

unless you heard any strange grinding and trashing noises your hard drive should be ok but it's good to have all your data backup.
about the message that popup, sometime it's just false positive uninstall and reinstall the software will fix the issue or probably it really indicates that the hard drive need to be replaced.
hard drives nowadays are pretty cheap and not that difficult to replace but better to get someone who is familiar with your laptop to fix it.

Normally a message like that is due to S.M.A.R.T on the hard drive has detected a problem that suggests the hard drive wont last much longer. Some computers let you disable S.M.A.R.T in the BIOS which means it ignores the errors.
Do you have the restore disks? Is the laptop still under warrenty?

The laptop is 2 years old so warranty has ran out. I have tried the recovery disc which came with the pc, but the message is still there at startup. I will just let it die on its own if thats the case, and just buy a new one when it goes. Everything is backed up.

It's been a really long time since I last came to Esato! Anyway, @pmerryman, laptop hard drives are usually quite easy to replace. Just take a look at the bottom of the laptop, there are usually 2 removable panels. One is for the RAM and the other, the hard drive (usually the bigger of the 2).
Your recovery disc will work on the new hard drive. I recommend that you replace the hard drive before it fails totally as any information written to it after it's last back up will be lost. As for the replacement drive, any 2.5 inch hard drive will do the job. I've had very good experiences with Western Digital hard drives and would strongly recommend their Scorpio Black line of drives. They perform pretty well as they run at 7200rpm compared to the normal 5400rpm ones that come with most laptops. But of course, when it comes to hard drives, reliability is of the utmost importance, and this is where I've had very good experiences with Western Digital.
