This was a big surprise because we have heard severalt times that the Xperia X10 update path ended with the 2.1 update

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 was originally shipped with Android 1.6 and for a long time, Sony Ericsson meant that their OS tweaks was so good that no one would ever want a OS update. The OS update race turned out to be a very important factor when techies was looking for new Android handsets. Sony Ericsson was one of the worst in class to offer OS updates for their older devices so many potential buyers went for other brands.

This has now changed. Sony Ericsson is the first manufacture apart from Google itself to offer Android 2.3 Gingerbread on their new handsets. Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo, Xperia Play and Xperia Pro all have Android 2.3 pre-installed.

The official Sony Ericsson Product Blog this week announced that the first Android smartphone from Sony Ericsson will receive Gingerbread 2.3 later this year. The Xperia X10 has a decent 1GHz CPU and with added OS speed improvement, the X10 could be more responsive and less battery consuming with Gingerbread installed.

Sony Ericsson was initially not going to offer more OS updates for the Xperia X10 after the 2.1 update last year, but after working with the four new Xperia models, the engineers came up with a solution how to make the X10 run on Gingerbread as well.

The update will be available in the end of quarter 2 or begining of quarter 3 this year. Which should translate to July 2011.

Wtf by that time the handset will be dead anyway.
Avoid x10 it's plastic is very very poor quality.
Sony should stick to ps3.

Why would it be dead? Gingerbread has just been released and to get it a 2-3 months later is acceptable. The hardware is still capable for 2.3 and the build quality is very good on mine.

Build quality is excellent.

My screen is still scratch free after 12 months. Gingerbread will prolong the life of the X10, and the design is far from non-descript, unlike some other phones.

8MP Cam, 1Ghz processor will see it good for another year at least IMO.

I thought the 384MB ram on X10 would be a hindrance since most 2.3 phones have >=512MB. though probably SE removed some Custom programs for the sake of fixing/optimizing the RAM limitation.

Agreed. I moved from iPhone4 to X10 just recently and the more I use the X10 the more I love it. I still can't figure out why it got such a bad rap unless it was the Android 1.6. Hardware wise, it's awesome and with Android 2.1 it's quite nice. Should be even better with 2.3.
