Google and any cloud based email provider has way more resources at its disposal to back up your email, but having your own local storage won't hurt.
It would depend on how much mail you actually have.
I'm pushing the 7GB limit of Google, on just my personal account... but then again, there's a lot of mail I could probably do without as well.
Cloud based, for me, is much better. Just don't back-up your Gmail on a Google based back-up as well... hahahaha...
