CCD is the chip for digital camera we see in the market. (Eg Canon, fuji etc etc)
This chip might be able to improve the picture quality we found in most phone with camera function |

By April huh? .... Hmmm... just in time for the new...
Seriously, the new SE phones will be equipped with these... and newer LCD displays. Mostly 16-bit screens. Just wait and see. |

Well, you can't really compare the Japanese SE phones to the European ones. They're pretty much all on CDMA using DoCoMo. Pretty propietary and kiddyish, IMHO. There's a high definition camera on the new Clie NX90 (I think...). |

Oppp Sony Japan I mean the mobile phone unit...not the whole company.
BTW CDMA or DOCOMO(PDC) are irrelavent to the camera technology they adopt. The site stated clearly this chip will be used on mobile phone....tht is regardless of network. Of course now , most japanese network is selling phone with camera but I think they are using CMOS chip which might offer around 300k pixel instead of 1mega pixel as assumed by the person who report the news.
BTW Sony is a japanese company and of course the official press release will be from Japan. They make the chip in those factory and sell them world wide.

YEs you are right! Gd87 has camera with ccd. Nice pictures, excellent display but the size of pics was a major drawback....

CCD = Charge Couple Device. It is the technology found in practically all digital cameras on the market today. It is very similar to the cells on a normal camera film in that it reacts to varying amounts of light. I don't currently know what technology is used in current mobile phone cameras but from what i've seen the picture quality doesn't rival that of your average camera. But then i don't think there meant to! |

Of course, the camera technoligy isn't bound to the provider, but to the technoligy they're using! I doubt it'd be fun or cheap to send a 1mpixel image over GSM/GPRS. Those phones simply won't show up in Europe till we get UMTS rollin'. And that won't be for another 5 years (until it's halfway payable...).
And - IMHO - a 1mpixel CCD would still be a bad digital camera...

but when compare to what is offered by MCA-25 and P800, it is another leap forward.
BTW when the speed to transmit data improved, high resolution picture is not a problem...the biggest problem should be price charged by service provider. |

Not just the price but the time of when will a certain network provider offer such services. Some offer right now at 30kbps over gprs. They shld maximize the kbps speed in download and upload for us to enjoy those high tech pix specs(be it ccd or cmos) to d max up to the time 3G/UMTS/EDGE comes in.Network support and handset features shld work hand in hand.
