Android to compete with Symbian for No.1 spot in mobile OS market
Google Inc.'s popular Android mobile platform will overtake mobile operating systems made by Research In Motion (RIM), Apple and Microsoft by 2010 and will keep stride with Nokia's Symbian OS for the No.1 spot by 2014, research firm Gartner Inc. said.
According to a Gartner report, Android will become No.2 mobile OS by the end of this year, controlling 17.7 percent of the market. In comparison, RIM's BlackBerry OS, Apple's iOS and Microsoft's Windows Phone will control 17.5 percent, 15.4 percent and 4.7 percent respectively. The only mobile OS to beat Android this year will be Nokia's Symbian OS, which will control 40.1 percent.
However, according to Gartner, the gap between Symbian and Android will be closing fast and in 2014, Symbian's market share will drop to 30.2 percent while Android's market share will surge to 29.6 percent. RIM, Apple and Microsoft are predicted to see the market share of their mobile OS drop to 11.7 percent, 14.9 percent and 3.9 percent respectively in 2014.

(ie. HTC making more devices, because lets face it its them who make the best Android devices)

Wow google is about to dominate everything. The world is next. 
Anyway, unless Nokia cleans up Symbian I predict that it will go down faster than was stated in the article. Then again Nokia with such a large share could do well by cleaning up Symbian and maintaining their dominance.
I say that while making plans buying the Nokia N8.

We don't even need to see the stats. This was known since time ago.
The problem now is who will dominate the Market with their Android mobile phones  .
And I think that's too much time. 2014? I say it will be before.

That article was kind of misleading. Did it ever mention that these numbers was for smartphones and not the market in general?

I somewhat agree. At the pace android phones are being activated and with people being less and less happy with Nokia's Symbian it could possibly in two years. Heck, Nokia might even jump on the Symbian bandwagon.
Nokia has about one year or so to bring Symbian up to par or face losing out further to the new comers.
Samsung as the number two phone maker seems poised to dominate the Android market.Their phones or doing very well right now.

I think you're missing the point here, what makes Android so successful is the fact that its shipped in different devices by different manufacturers with a variety of hardware mixes, for YOU HTC may make the best, for some its Moto, Samsung, SE, Dell, Acer etc... As great as the Desire is for me personaly its design, camera, battery and display arent as good as the X10s for example, so i took the X10, and thats what's going to allow Android to get into more pockets, the wide variety of available Androids as this will allow you to pick the one that matchs your needs best, without leaving your favourite manufacturer or leaving Android.

Not sure what your point is? The article is obviously about smartphone OS stats even if they haven't spelled it out.
The Symbian stats flatter Nokia as browsing stats and app download stats show Symbian users are mostly not smartphone users in the true sense of the word but actually premium feature-phone users. Android and iOS are growing because of the appeal of their App Stores and the extra functionality it brings. RIM and Symbian are flatlining because their appeal lies in other features and their App Stores are less vibrant than others.
I'm waiting to see if Nokia's boardroom changes (another one today - Head of Mobile Solutions) will lead to a tie-up with WP7, which would be good for both companies IMO.

I guess we shall see. Nokia's sales are slower than the current rate of growth.
Something must be amiss for them to lose both their CEO and Head of Mobile Solutions within a week. It's taken longer to get here because of Nokia's size and resilience but I firmly believe Nokia are now entering the restructuring phase  went through a couple of years ago.

I'm not saying that Gartner is wrong about their predictions for the next few years, but you should know why "Android soon in second place" has become the headlines these days instead of "Symbian will still be number one".
You should read these previous Android predictions by Gartner. It's quite funny, and very interesting. |

I agree with that, but it is generally, hence generally, the company that release the most, high quality, Android devices, with fantastic customer service.
Look at , always so many steps behind, people saying the X10 will get 2.2 by christmas, sorry, but the phone was released months ago, and 2.2 isn't exactly new anymore, in fact I wouldn't be suprised if Google was keeping 3.0 Gingerbread quiet, that might be released by then, who knows.
