How do i root a HTC desire? |

My brother has just bought a Orange branded HTC desire and wants to rid of the Orange branding and restore it to its generic settings so he can update Android properly how easy or hard is it to root the phone and what is the process?

Oh bear in mind if you have already unlocked it, and you change the firmware, it will re-lock it (on Orange Desire's).
Any help give me a shout, got the exact same one
