on the x10i you just pull down the satus bar and presses "remove" to remove messages in the satusbar.

See the top section of the display which shows the signal, time etc ? Put your finger in the middle and sweep down. Select each notification one at a time to finish installing. Exit the application to remove the notification.

Regarding the wifi issue. This is normal and is a well documented issue among the x10 series. I get it on my mini, mini pro and regular x10. If you lose the network signal you also lose wifi until you get a network signal again. Your wifi also disconnects when the screen turns off as well to save power. However this part can be changed in the settings.

Most of the time, it's not the phone, but your wifi router.

Home wifi routers are extremely notorious for hanging, and getting stuck.

At times, I have my iPod Touch, X10 Mini, Macbook and iPad all online... then the iPad won't be able to connect to the net despite having the proper IP add and all...but all my other devices can surf.

I restart my Linksys, then everything is ok

Then the next day, happens again but this time to my X10 Mini...

So just try restarting your wifi or router... it's the culprit almost 90% of the time!

im having this message notification icon problem. i have both the default one and handcent. even when i have checked the messages, i still get this icon shaped like an envelope. it only gets cleared when i hit the clear button. i've uninstalled and reinstalled handcent. i've set the notifications to off but it's still annoyingly there.

That's not handcent. That's the default Messages notification icon, go to Settings then Sony Ericsson then Messaging. Shut off ALL the notifications there.
