Hey Guys,
Been a long time since I was an Esato regular, however, was hoping for a bit of constructive feedback. Wrote an app called NameBuzz:
A new concept in incoming caller/SMS ID technology. Silently know who's calling, without your phone leaving your pocket!
- Vibrate pattern based on syllables in the caller's contact name.
- Create custom vibrate patterns per contact.
- Speak contact name out loud.
- Vibrate on call end.
- Press Volume key to disable during call/incoming sms.
- Tested with HTC sense on HTC Desire Z, and stock Nexus One (2.1 & 2.2)
- English only.
If you're on your phone you can install with the following link:
market://search?q=pname:com.dazbradbury.namebuzz
Appbrain URL: NameBuzz on AppBrain
It's only available on Android 2.1 and above, does that rule out SE phones for the time-being? If someone wants to try it on a 1.6 SE Device let me know and I'll send you the file, can't test it myself though!
If anyone gives it a go, feel free to let me know what you think!
Cheers,
Daz.

Hi Daz, nice to have you back.
Yeah, I think it sounds good. With my previous non-smart SE phones you could set up the 'Play caller name' feature via the speed dialling set up and I always found this useful and one of the features I miss on my current phone.
So with your application, would the 'Speak Caller Name' feature be a recording of your own voice or would it be googles? And if so could we choose male or female?
The Custom vibrate is also a good feature as you can tell who is calling.
Not sure about the vibrate pattern based on the syllables of the callers name because most peoples names have 1,2,3 syllables. i.e, Jason, steven, david, connie, etc, all have two syllables.

Hey,
Thanks for the feedback!
So with your application, would the 'Speak Caller Name' feature be a recording of your own voice or would it be googles? And if so could we choose male or female?
So firstly, it uses Google's Text-to-speech library. The set-up it uses for the time being is the default one based on your language settings. At some point, this could be made customisable though!
Not sure about the vibrate pattern based on the syllables of the callers name because most peoples names have 1,2,3 syllables. i.e, Jason, steven, david, connie, etc, all have two syllables.
The idea here is that you only have 5 or so people who call you regularly, hence, the chances are their names will be differentiate-able at least. In the even that isn't the case, you can customise each contact as you please. After a week or so use, you should be able to tell who is calling just from the buzz pattern, something I find really useful in meetings/public transport/cinema etc..
So are you running Android at the moment? If it's a version less than 2.1, let me know if you want to test it out. I can't guarantee it will work though, hence me making it a requirement in the market.
Cheers!
Daz.

I'd love to test your app (on a X10 mini, running Android 1.6)

Goldenface, I've sent it your way.
RandomCarpet, If goldenface tells me it works on 1.6, I'll enable it in the market and you can you can give it a go. I'm not too optimistic, as I think I might be using some of the 2.0 features, so will wait till goldenface gets back. Thanks for the interest though!

Hi James,
It's a feature I'll add to my list, I think it should be possible - but the number of different voices pre-installed may not be large enough for this to be that useful. We'll see...

@brm170: I'll take a look and see what options are available in TTS. But you're right, different voice per caller might be quite cool.
Cheers,
Daz.
