my dads fone was bought from the vodafone shop, and im able to place my orange sim into his fone and use it normally.
but im aware that u cant place other network sims into orange fones.

tho i asked a guy at Phones4u today n he sed dat every fone is locked onto its network, and u cant put other sims in it.

is he wrong?? or is this a recent(ish) thing?

gaz.

Yep thats right, as nearly all phones are now dual band they are capable of using any uk network and most are unlocked. Like sim free phones.

In Aust, no phones are locked to networks. I would hate to imagine the problems this could cause.

Eg. My battery runs out and I use my SIM in another friends phone to make a call or check voicemail, if I wasnt on the same network I mightnt be able to use it, what a pain in the a$$

I have actually gotthe true story behind this:

SE was selling so many t68i units in the UK , the Networks all agreed that the phones could be shipped and sold unlocked to save time and match demand. Thats why most are sold unlocked now...not sure about other SE phones but know this is definately true for the T68i

Orange will unlock your phone for £20.00 after your 12 month contract expires,if you want it unlocked before the 12 months is up you would have to pay your line rental charges upfront, depending on how many months left in your contract.
If nobody wants it.. put it on eBay.

@-GAZ-, well there seems to be alot of confusion on this subject, strange bullshit from that guy in the shop & that "true story" about all t68`s being unlocked so this is the situation NO CRAP;
In UK All Orange phones are locked to Orange,
All (i`m fairly sure) TMobile are locked to TMobile
Voda (contract purchased) phones are NOT network locked,
o2 (contract purchased) phones are NOT network locked unless it`s a o2 special product like the XDA.
Pay as you go units from all the networks tend to be locked but some are not.
THESE RULES APPLY TO ALL RETAILERS IN THE UK
So just to recap a general rule is that all gsm 1800(Orange / TMobile) networks lock their phones, where the GSM 900 networks (Voda/O2) when selling a contract phone DON`T lock them. this situation has stood for years in the UK.
Nothing is guaranteed so always try your sim, as a test i highly recomend you go to that Phones4U shop, ask for a CONTRACT o2/Voda demo & try your Orange sim in it, i`m saying it will work on all but the XDA`s & the pre pay units. Any questions feel free to pm me.

well you can call it "bullshit" if you want sweetie, but ive got it from more than one reliable source that the t68i...from the end of december or slightly earlier was being sold unlocked!! for all networks...an i am on T-mobile and got a t68 which had vodafone gprs settings on it....reason.......they did not hav tmobile ones left...all are the same....

This applies to carphone warehouse...i presume its the same anywhere else....SE are delivering unlocked t68is

And pachy...try to accept the information as genuine instead of slagging it off and replacing it with you "i think"s and presumtions, what i said was true. ill stand by it

@ginger..., I only (unlike some people) say "i think" when i don`t deffinately know for sure that ONLY applies to the T Mobile phones that i`m not sure off.
Your bullshit earlier would imply that the Orange phones have no Orange logo on them either, which is crap mate,
FACT all Orange T68/i phones have SPECIFIC Orange software on them so DON`T F**KIN TALK F**KIN Bollocks to me you idiot.
CPW themselves may have had to use some non locked phones from stock (all t68m phones were upgraded to i spec & sold cheap over xmas) but if they sold non locked phones on Orange it would have been in breach of their agreement with Orange.
Also it might pay you to read the header post again, the guy said he was told all phones are locked to the networks which is rubbish, & he wanted to know why his dads voda t68i was unlocked. your post doesn`t pay any attention to the fact that ALL voda t68i`s are ALWAYS unlocked does it you silly tart !

i said it applied to carphone warehouse...get your facts straight...if you get it from there its unlocked.....

ive had 3 from there...all unlocked just as the guy from t-mobile told me they would be.....they are unlocked.

im not really going to argue with you, its not that important...but it helps if you read things and then comment instead if just jumping in.

@Ginger disused balls, Psychologists refer to this kind of statement as subconscious self assessment.

not too bothered what psychologists say to be honest...most of it is twaddle : )

but im not arguing because the following is usually true:

Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down and beat you with experience...
