Hi fellow esato members,

I'm considering getting an Android device and I would appreciate your insight .
I currently own a 3GS and it's a very good device, but since I have a thing for gadgets, I end up craving something new after a couple of months lol. I'm looking for a android device with good performance, good software, good screen and reasonable battery life.
I am considering the HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S and X10. I like the HTC Desire's overall design and it's getting froyo now which is compelling, but I have some doubts... like the memory for example. How much is available for apps and files? Froyo allows for apps to be installed in the memory card but which apps actually support that feature already? Is anyone using froyo already and have that information? This is kinda important coming from an iphone.
The Galaxy S: How is the performance? I've read people complaining about it. And how is the memory management? You have 2gb for system/apps and the 8/16gb for media? The overall design reminds me a lot of the iphone (which I don't like), do the apps follow the iphone-looks too?
Now, the X10. I like the X10's design. The screen is huge and great. I just have problems with the android 1.6 thing... Do users often find apps they can't install because of their android version? How's the performance? (I've also read people saying it's a slow phone). How's the memory situation with the X10?
I also wanted to know more about the sound quality with all 3 phones and battery life too. How long (days/hours) does your phone last with average usage?

thx a lot!

This is my advice.Sit tight for a month.See what SE release and then make your decision.
If a miracle happens and its Froyo then get the X10.If its Eclair then you gonna have to think a little harder on that one.
That Samsung does have a bit of an iPhone look to it and coming from an iPhone it will kinda feel too fimiliar
if you looking for change.
If SE only releases 2.1 and Froyo is that important to you then go for the Desire.
Also in that month there might be another phone other than those three hiding in the wings that
might cancel those three out altogether.
Design wise, the X10 in my opinion is the best looking.
Ive had no problem installing apps at this present moment in time and sound coming through just the
headphones that came with the phone is pretty loud and clear.
Battery life for me on the R2 firmware is pretty good.
Good luck with making your choice

This is where my doubt sink in regarding if X10 could really have a taste of Froyo. I can honestly say that the X10 is one device that is not future-proof compared to Desire or Galaxy S. I could feel one's owner frustration that the X10 maybe the best looking Android device in the market coupled that with an impressive camera and yet may not have the full potential of what Froyo could offer. Unless SE makes miracle like an Eclair update could really feel like Froyo. Other manufacturer is already coming up with new Android phones that may come with Froyo out-of-the-box. You should really wait a month or two, see what transpires in Android world then decide which one to get.

I agree with him. Sit tight for this month or may be 2 months. See if SE comes out with Froyo for X10, if not. I think go for Desire. X10 is brilliant when it comes to user experience so that makes one of the best Android phones

Its worth knowing that an improved version of the Samsung Galaxy S is gonig to be released. Quote from rookwise:

If I was goiing to buy a Samsung (bearing in mind the last samsung phone I bought was when the D600 first came out) I would certainly not get the Galaxy S. Especially when theres a new and improved Galaxy about to be released very soon which looks much better specced apart from the slightly smaller Super AMOLED screen.

Just for info.

Galaxy S
Dimensions 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm
Weight 119 g

X10
Dimensions 119 x 63 x 13 mm
Weight 135 g

X10 does indeed weigh more but the dimensions aren't that different.

It makes sense to get the HTC Desire, why wait for updates on the X10 which will be delayed and set back, when the phone is also covered in crap. Get the Desire, Froyo 2.2, HTC Sense (voted the best by majority), quick, better looking IMO (in black), and overall better value for money (and no I am not a HTC Fanboy, I have an X10 too)

That Samsung Q looks interesting... better specs (hdmi, 8mp, and etc) and all, I just think the 3' screen is a bit unrealistic. 3.7' - 4' have become the rule for android devices, why release a phone with only 3'? Another problem is the UI. If Samsung puts the same UI as in the Galaxy S, it's gonna look too much like an iphone again.
I was considering waiting but the problem is that 2 months from now people will already be talking about android 3.0 and so on. Android devices are multiplying like rabbits lol. I just want an android device that's good and future-proof. The nexus one seemed like a good idea but google killed it, so I'm afraid it isn't going to be worth anything when I try to resell it a couple of months from now. (plus, the android's standard UI is kinda poor. I had a motorola milestone and was totally disappointed with it).

I would still recommend the X10 over the others, unless Froyo is a big deal to you then get the Desire, but otherwise i'd say get an X10.
So far i havent had any problems with software not wanting to install due to the Android version,it seems to me that probably around 95% of software in the Market supports Donut (1.6) ,all the major software like Astro file manager, Aldiko ebook reader, YXPlayer (divx,xvid,avi,mp4) player, task killers, productivity apps etc...mostly work on 1.6 ,where you may find compatibility issues is in games, but even then most work as it seems there arent many yet that require OpenGL2.0 support. X10 supports 1.1 but will get 2.0 with Eclaire update.
Performance wise the X10 has improved in terms of speed, fluidity, and battery life since the R2BA023/24 update, it slows down where other Androids slow down,in App Manager ,especialy if you a lot of software, it has a slight lag when opening it but after that its fine.
Memory wise,i havent had an issue, X10 has around 430mb maybe even a bit more, ive installed quite a lot of software and still have 305mb available.
Sound quality is excellent, very clear yet bassy.
Battery life isnt bad,i take it off the charger at 11:30am in the morning and at around 1am early hours of the next is when its back on it, my useage is above average, browse the net with Opera Mini on and off for around 7hours, send around 10texts a day, around 15mins worth of calls, 2hours music and quite a lot of IM. Also have a weather widget updating 8times daily and a facebook widget updating every hour or so. Hope that helps.

Thx for the help everybody. I guess I'm gonna wait a bit. I'm sure there are newer android devices coming to the market with froyo and better specs soon, so waiting is probably the best thing to do.
