Like many other members on this board, Im fed up with waiting for the P800 to be released in the UK, the whole thing has been a joke. I am therefore planning on purchasing one overseas, however I have the following questions:-

1) Will I have to pay VAT on the product when it is shipped into the UK
2) Will the warranty cover it for repairs
3) Has anyone any recommendations on where to purchase the p800 overseas, website urls, where the best price is???

Many Thanks

I got mine from V2BOI when he visited here from Singapore a couple of weeks back.

You could get one from http://www.lohenette.fi/ which I nearly did. As its in Europe you definitly won't have to pay VAT (which you might if you get one from Singapore and customs catch it, or the courier company charge VAT as they must or...)

Also you will definitly get warranty support with no questions.

To be honest, although it is a good unit, I'm still a bit ho-hum about the P800 and still use my IPAQ 5450 for alot of things like web browsing etc so you might want to wait just a little longer and get a local one which may just be a little cheaper. Personally, if HP do an Ipaq with wifi and triband GSM etc I will probably change to that.

cheers for the responses, I looked at a price on the website you posted and it was 528 uk pounds, which isnt bad at all considering UK sony eshop are gonna do it for 500£. Has anyone ordered from www.lohenette.fi ??? Are they reliable? How long do they take to deliver??? Thanks In Advance

well I got the web site from someone here and I exchanged two emails with them before finding out about this guy coming from Singapore and they seemed quite friendly. They ship overnight by DHL if I remember correctly. They speak good english in the emails so contact them for more info.

Just out of interest...

I haven't had a PDA before and am in the process of whether to go for a P800 or stick with my T68i and pair that up with a Tungsten-T which has built in Bluetooth.

I've also been tempted by PocketPCs but the price is a bit higher than what I'd want to pay with ones that have built in Bluetooth. I realise that the models that don't have BT built in can have it added but that costs an extra £100 or so.

How easy is it to get my T68i connected up to a PocketPC that DOES NOT have built in BT? Would my only resort be to use IrDA? Or pay some extortionate price for a cable to link things up?

I am desperate for this phone as well, my SH 888 lasts 1 or 2 short calls.

I have been waiting since last Sept '02 for the release and I even bourght a screen protector from Brando for it a few weeks ago.

However I think two more weeks is worth the wait for the piece of mind.

Justin at SE eshop 08705 238 238 has said in the past that delivery would be late Jan or early Feb '03 (he couldn't be sure becaue an exact date or price had not been given), but this time (today) he is giving an exact date- 17 Feb 2003 and also the number of units 1500. and an exact price £499 inc VAT

The phone has come out in Holland etc release must been soon for the UK

If you order from SE you can send it back within 14 days, no quibble.

Also if you buy on your Barclaycard you get 60 days and if you find it cheaper Barclaycard will refund the difference.

You may have guessed I've ordered one today from the eshop.

I've waited this long I don't want it to end in tears.

N

ps

If I was going to have a bet, I would say SE eshop will get the units on Monday 17 Feb 2003 and I will get my P800 on the Tuesday or Weds, Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4U etc will get them a week or so later.

If you don't want the size of the P800 (which isn't as big as I thought) and want the flexibility of having a small phone for going clubbing etc then the T68i/PDA is the way to go. From there it is really personal choice. If you are used to Palm and like the interface go for the Tungsten. If you, like me, prefer pocketpc then the ipaq is a good choice.

They all come these days with IRDA I believe so if your PDA does not have bluetooth then the IRDA is quite workable (its what we all had to do before bluetooth), just not as convenient since you have to line up the IR ports and the palm and ipaqs I have had before all had built in dial-up support via IR so you shouldn't have a problem there either.

You don't pay British VAT but you've to pay Finnish sales tax. Not much of a difference between the two?

Dunno. They quote 800 euros for the P800 on their web site and they quoted me a total delivered by courier price of 880 euros.

I want to pre-order the P800 from the SonyEricsson site, but I can't seem to find the P800 in the eshop on the website. Anyone got any clues?

Thanks

BTW
gadgetboytom is wrong in saying no VAT will be due on a P800 import into the UK, some duty will almost certainly have to be payed probably to the Courier when he delivers the unit.

This IMHO tips the balance in favour of waiting

Ps
what ever you do DONT buy unless it's on a credit card you get extra protection

Unfortunately you can only pre-order the P800 via their telephone hotline for now. The number is on the website somewhere
